Windows Server 2008 and Branch Office Infrastructure

I gave a presentation at IMTC 2008 here in Dublin last Friday on Windows Server 2008 and how it can be used to resolve many of the problems with owning and managing a branch office infrastructure.  90% of what I mentioned is included in the operating system and can be used for free.

IMTC was good.  There was still a majority of developers there ( Boo! Wink ) but the organisers are keen to change that with the help of the Irish IT pro communities.  It is very much a cooperative and cost driven event so I’ll be keen to help with the communications next year.

The sessions that were of the most interest to me were:
  • Nick Whittome gave an exclusive look at SBS 2008 and stressed how startup MS partners should be adopting SBS – mainly because it’s included in the ultra-affordable Microsoft Partner Action Pack (€18,000 of software for less than €400).
  • Mark Mulvany gave an interesting presentation on Windows Mobile.  I’m allergic to phones so most of what he spoke about was new to me.
  • Duncan McAlynn spoke about  vNext; the next version of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager which is capable of managing Hyper-V and VMware ESX.
  • And Dave Northey gave a practical demo of building a Hyper-V cluster on Server Core and demonstrated failover.

The sessions were video recorded so I expect they’ll be made available onlone at some point in the "near" future.  In the meantime, you can download a PDF of my session.
