I’ve just read this post by Ben Armstrong. I find this interesting because last Summer PSS were very clear with me that they were not supported at all in production. Hmm. There’s too many gotchyas with snapshots in production so I say “steer clear”!

Microsoft Application Virtualisation for Servers
It’s not been a secret that MS has been working on this. I was at a small meeting at TechEd EMEA where we were asked about this subject and whether it’s something we’d consider. It’s an interesting idea … imaging a SQL instance being a mobile resource, or a web server being mobile? That’s what we’re talking about. Deploy instantly when you need extra resources, move resources around to balance workloads or for fault tolerance.
Microsoft did a demo of their new technology at MMS. What’s really cool is that they appear to be reusing VMM for this.
Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008
SP2 for Vista and W2008 has gone RTM. I don’t believe it’ generally available yet. It’s on TechNet from what I have read.
Holy ****! Steve Riley Made Redundant At Microsoft
Security wizard, Steve Riley, posted on his blog that he was a victim of the second round of layoffs. Steve is best known for his entertaining but highly educational talks on security in Microsoft networks. It’s sad to see someone like this lose their job but he’s the sort of person that’ll land on his feet and find something excellent elsewhere. Best of luck and thanks for the work Steve!
Hyper V R2 Deep Dive
I’ve posted the presentation from the Windows User Group Event that I co-hosted with Dave Northey from Microsoft Ireland last week. I did the talking and Dave ran through the demos. As usual, Slideshare has mangled the animations that make the graphics work best.
Slipstream SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1
I’ve just been working on a new server build that included SQL 2008. The customer wanted SQL 2008 (full installation) and SP1 for SQL 2008. I put both downloaders on the server and went to work. Firstly, SQL 2008 fought me on this clean W2008 build. I ended up doing a 3-phase installation of SQL (some components at a time). Then when I installed SP1 it broke the master database during the upgrade.
I was at my wits end when I remembered I could slipstream or integrate the service pack into the installation media for SQL 2008. A quick search led to the article I needed. This page shows you how to slipstream SP1 into SQL 2008. You then have only one install to do instead of two.
This sorted out my problem for this server – but it has me worried about other existing SQL 2008 RTM/SP0 installations.
