Jeff Woolsey (head of virtualisation at MS) talks about processor compatibility mode and 64 logical processor support in Hyper-V R2 in this 5 minute video interview.
He talks about Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 as being a money saver. On the face of it, yes. Really though, when you look at Enterprise or Datacenter editions they work out being free or even better! And they are priced even better if you fall into the educational price bracket from MS.
I see Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 being fine in a few scenarios:
- VDI where free VM server licenses won’t get used
- Linux VM hosting where those free VM Windows Server licenses again don’t matter
- Some EBS or SBS scenarios,e.g. when you want to virtualise the Standard editions.
