What Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V Are Called

There are no such things as:

  • W2012
  • Windows Server 8.  That was the old codename before the official title was announced.
  • Hyper-V v3.0
  • Hyper-V R3

The name of the server is Windows Server 2012.  The short for that is WS2012.

The name of the hypervisor is Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V.  The short for that is WS2012 Hyper-V.  There is also the free download, called Hyper-V Server 2012.

Hyper-V is available on Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise.  It’s official name is Windows 8 Client Hyper-V.

  1. But anyone who has any insights into Microsoft OSes would still know what they are talking about, isn’t that the point of abbreviations? One would surely be labeled as an idiot if correcting someone at a meeting if they used Win2012 instead of WS2012.

    • Anyone with an insight into Microsoft OSs knows that a person using this incorrect terminology is either lazy or not all that well informed. As a customer, I’d be wary of anyone talking about Hyper-V 3.0 running on Win2012. I immediately discount any online material that I see using these terms.

Also, loose usage of terminology makes searchable documentation impossible. What do you search for: W2012, WS2012, Win2012, WinSvr2012, WinSrvr2012?

Just get it right in the first place. There’s no excuse for it if you know better.
