Why Should You Attend TechEd Europe 2014

Other than the fact that this might be the venue of the most important product announcements in Microsoft’s recent history … hmm … let me think …

Hear what community members say about TechEd at the TechEd Roundtable

I have also recorded a video (on Instagram) that discusess how to convince your boss that you need to go to TechEd Europe.

But honestly, traditional learning mechanisms can no longer keep up with sprint development, new features out every few weeks, and RTMs every 12-18 months. TechEd is like a triple espresso shot of learning … you take 4-5 days, depending on travel, out of your regular work schedule and get immersed in new tech, from keynote, to foundation, to deep dive … and maybe throw in some hands on labs and certification while you’re at it. I learn at TechEd (as an MVP I also am lucky to have MVP sources); a lot of what I write about is sourced from TechEd sessions or materials. TechEd sessions give me access to wide amounts of information … and I can chat with the Microsoft experts in the expo hall afterwards.

There is nothing else like this learning experience in the Microsoft world for the general public. And I’m pretty sure that TechEd Europe 2014 will be a very special education opportunity. We’re on the threshold of a very interesting time.

July 16th Webcast – 3 New Storage Features in WS2012 R2

I will be one of the presenters in a webcast hosted by the Petri IT Knowledgebase and sponsored by Veeam on July 16th at 13:00 EDT (18:00 UK/Irish Time). In this presentation I’ll be explaining the technologies that enabled Windows Server 2012 R2 (WS2012 R2) software-defined storage and Hyper-V over SMB 3.0. Chris Henley from Veeam will also discuss their backup and disaster recovery technology. And then there will be a Q&A session. There will be a moderator so you can fire in your questions for us to answer.

Don’t Be An IT Dinosaur – Attend TechCamp 2014 On June 19/20

A monumental change is happing in IT right now. You can fight it all you want, but cloud is a disrupting force that will effect our entire environment. IT pros are scared of “the cloud” … but is their fear justified?

This is why a bunch of us are presenting on the IT pro aspects of the Microsoft Cloud OS on June 19th and 20th. It’s a 2 day event in Dublin Citywest, where you can register for the Hybrid Cloud stuff (infrastructure as a service or IaaS) on June 19th, the Office365/etc stuff (software as a service or SaaS) on June 20th, or even register for both days.

The content on June 19th will span on-premises IT, building private clouds, automation, and mixing your on-premise infrastructure with Microsoft Azure. On June 20th we move on to SaaS where there will be lots of Office 365, Windows Intune, and Power BI. All presenters have been instructed to present demo-heavy “here’s how to …” technical sessions.

Now is the time to learn and evolve. Don’t be a dinosaur; get on board with the cloud now and be the person who is employable in 5 years time. You can choose to cover your ears and close your eyes, but you’ll be dug up from an IT tar pit in a few million years time.

IT pros that ignored the cloud as it made them extinct

This event WILL NOT BE REPEATED. This is a once-off collection of subject expert speakers. No roadshow, no Microsoft Ireland event, and no partner event will repeat what we’re doing at TechCamp.

And consultants … this message goes double for you.

TechDays San Francisco June 5-6

Folks of the Bay Area and surrounding counties – if you want to learn about Microsoft commercial technology such as Azure, Lync, Hybrid Cloud, ADFS, OS deployment, and more, then you need to check out TechDays. If I lived in 49er country then I would register.

The speaker list is a whos-who from the west coast Microsoft community. The location is easy to find – it’s the MSFT office near the terminus of the Powell cable car. There’s loads of public transport routes in/out – I know this and I’ve only visited the Bay three times from Ireland.

So check out the agenda, register, attend, and learn something to advance your career.

Event Notes: The Build 2014 Keynote – Windows 8.1 Update and Office for Touch

Joe Belfiore is still talking. The OS is focused on:

  • Keyboard/mouse usage
  • Enterprise
  • Use on smaller devices

He demos on a desktop and uses mouse and keyboard. There is a new enterprise mode in IE11 to simulate IE8. This lets legacy sites to access previously deprecated browser features.

The taskbar got improvements (it’s the most used bit of Windows). Windows Store apps can be pinned. A title bar now appears in apps if you use the mouse, so you get close and minimise. I have found this auto hide/appear feature to be finicky (I installed the accidentally leaked update build).

On the Start Screen there is a new power button and a search button. Right-clicking on live tiles gives you a context menu. CTRL allows you to select multiple tiles. The new Store UI will be keyboard and mouse friendly. This newer store will come at a later point.

Available on April 8th via Windows Update. Developers will get more news from David Treadwell.

Next up is the Corporate VP of the Operating Systems Group, David Treadwell, to talk about developer platforms and tools.

Universal Windows Apps is brought via new WinRT for Windows Phones. You have a common dev platform for phones, tablets, and PCs. That’s a first in the industry, and should make Windows more interesting for developers. Lots of boring Visual Studio crap here. Now there will be common identity (shared app identity); customers can buy an app once and use it on any platform. Durable content allows it to run across apps across platforms. This is optional for devs.

Kirk Koenigsbauer comes out to talk about touch-first Office for Windows (codename “Gemini”). PowerPoint is first.

image

It was built from the ground up on DirectX to make it really really fast. We see how the whole thing works using the finger tip, with no mouse usage. It looks like a more feature rich version than on the iPad. The UI looks more Windows-like. What we’re seeing is still early code.

image

Like with the iPad, files should appear consistently across device types. We see the same code on Windows Phone (universal apps):

image

Harry Pierson of the OS Group is on stage to talk more about enterprise application needs. Some stuff about old code reuse for WinRT sideloaded apps. An old GUI app suddenly becomes a touch UI app, wrapping the old code with new code.

Back to Treadwell.

Build attendees can get the Windows 8.1 update on MSDN today.

UK & Ireland MVP Online Cloud OS Event Has Started

EDIT: You might have seen this post and then it “disappeared”. It was the one post that was not exported when I migrated my blog to Microsoft Azure.

The Cloud OS online event presented by British and Irish MVPs has begun. The presentations are pre-recorded and shared on YouTube. You can follow events and ask questions using #UKMVPCLOUD on Twitter.

image

I have two sessions. It was originally supposed to be only one but I had to record a substitute at the last second.

UK & Ireland MVPs Present – Microsoft Cloud OS, An Online Event

image

Our daring UK/IE MVP Lead, Claire Smyth, has organized an online event running on March 31st and April 1st to educate about the Microsoft Cloud OS. “What’s that?” you say … well that means you need to learn about how Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V, System Center 2012 R2, Windows Azure, and more can be combined to make private, public, and hybrid cloud IaaS solutions, tailored to your specific needs.

Most of the presenters, such as myself, are MVPs, and we are (as I have to remind some people sometimes) independent experts:

TechCamp 2013 Wrap Up

Yesterday we ran TechCamp 2013, the Irish community launch of Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, System Center 2012 R2, and Windows Intune.  All the feedback I have heard has been positive – thankfully!  🙂

We kicked off with Dave Northey (Microsoft CAT Program Manager).  Dave was the IT Pro DPE in Ireland for quite some time and has spoken at every launch event since Windows NT.  It would have been wrong not to have Dave in to do the keynote.

 WP_20131128_09_55_43_Pro

After that we broke into two tracks.  I did the WS2012 R2 session and next door, Damian Flynn (MVP) did the Windows 8.1 in the enterprise session.  I wanted to attend Damian’s session – I hear it was excellent, covering the BYOD and mobile worker scenarios.

WP_20131128_13_57_10_Pro

In the desktop track, some speakers from Microsoft introduced the new generation of devices that the various OEMs are bringing to market for Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, and what Windows Intune now offers for distributed end users, mobile workers, and BYOD device/app management.

Back in the server & cloud track, Paul Keely (MVP) did a session on service automation.

 WP_20131128_12_11_47_Pro

Damian was back on stage in the server & cloud track talking about using SCVMM 2012 R2 and Windows Azure Pack to build a hybrid cloud on Azure and Windows Server 2012 R2.  Kevin Greene (MVP) wrapped up the track explaining how System Center can be used to manage service availability and quality.

WP_20131128_15_29_55_Pro

Niall Brady (MVP), an Irish man living and working in Sweden, wrapped up the desktop & devices track by talking about System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2.

WP_20131128_15_27_17_Pro

We asked for a small registration fee to encourage legitimate registrations and to get a higher turn-up rate.  That fee went to a good cause, an NGO called Camara.  We had Mark Fox in from Camara.  This gave Mark a chance to tell the audience (after the keynote) about the good work that Camara does.  They take unwanted PCs from businesses, securely wipe the PCs, track them, and reuse those machines to provide a digital education to needy kids.  Education is the best weapon against poverty and war, and Camara is on the frontline. Mark also staffed a stand in the exhibition room, and hopefully businesses found a way to get rid of machines in their drive to rid themselves of Windows XP, and make a difference in the world while doing it.

 WP_20131128_09_42_44_Pro

We have a whole bunch of sponsors to thank:

  • MicroWarehouse: My employers were the primary sponsor.  This event would not have happened without the huge effort by John Moran.  I would have been happy with a projector in a shed (with VPN access to my lab) but John made this a professional event.
  • Microsoft: Thanks for the support from Ciaran Keohane, the help from Michael Meagher.
  • Ergo: One of the leading Microsoft partners in Ireland, regularly winning Server partner of the year.
  • DataOn Storage: One of the manufacturers of certified Storage Spaces hardware
  • Savision: Creating dashboards for System Center that aid IT operations.
  • Toshiba: who had some devices on hand (including their new 8” Windows 8.1 tablet), most of which aren’t even on sale yet!

A big thank you goes out to each speaker who prepared 75 minute sessions (two of them in the case of Damian).  In case you don’t know, that’s probably a couple of days work in preparing slides, demos, and rehearsing, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning.

And finally, thanks to everyone who helped us communicate the event, and of course, came to the event to hear about these new solutions.  I hope the day proved valuable.

We had a number of people ask if we’ll run more events like this next year.  I believe that this is something that we will strongly consider.  There won’t be any launch stuff for us to cover for a while, so maybe we’d look at doing more “here’s how” content.  We’ll have to review and consider our options before we make any decisions.

Launch Event – Learn From The Best; Not From The Rest

There are only hours now between now and the start of TechCamp 2013 in City West in Dublin, where Irish MVPs (and a couple of Microsoft folks) will be presenting on:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Service automation using System Center 2012 R2
  • Hybrid cloud using Hyper-V Network Virtualization, NVGRE, SCVMM 2012 R2 and Windows Azure Pack
  • Service level management using System Center 2012 R2
  • Windows 8.1 in the business
  • New Windows devices
  • BYOD, consumerisation of IT, and mobile device management
  • Enterprise desktop management using System Center 2012 R2

You could wait for a sales person come to town and tell you stuff that they’ve read about.

Or, you could make a little effort to come to TechCamp 2013 where some of the worlds leading experts independent experts (all with international followings and tech book credits to their names) on these technologies (who are Irish BTW) will be there to present an honest appraisal of this technology that they have worked with every day since the 2012 R2/8.1 previews were launched.
