{"id":9988,"date":"2009-11-17T14:08:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9988"},"modified":"2009-11-17T14:08:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"first-w2008-r2-hyper-v-cluster-operational","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9988","title":{"rendered":"First W2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster Operational"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OK \u2026 it is a single node cluster \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 But it is running!\u00a0 Live Migration is great and all but to be honest, the 2 things I want out of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V are Core Parking (to reduce our power bill) and Cluster Shared Volume.\u00a0 I really, really hated having to do per-LUN deployment of VM\u2019s on the cluster.\u00a0 They stressed me out when it came to alterations or deletions.\u00a0 Luckily, I\u2019d settled on a consistent naming standard for every component in the W2008 cluster.\u00a0 But still, one oversight and bang \u2013 a production VM goes off the air.\u00a0 With CSV, you deploy your storage once and add to it as required later.\u00a0 Love that!<\/p>\n<p>Setting up CSV was easy.\u00a0 I set up a LUN in the SAN management console.\u00a0 I linked this to the cluster node(s).\u00a0 I initialised it and brought it online with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/whdc\/device\/storage\/GPT-on-x64.mspx\" target=\"_blank\">GPT disk partition system<\/a>.\u00a0 This is optimised for LUN\u2019s over 2TB in size.\u00a0 Our CSV will keep on growing so 2TB will be nothing.\u00a0 I did a quick format and labelled the disk as CSV1.\u00a0 I did not add a letter to the drive because there was no point.<\/p>\n<p>Next I added the storage to the cluster.\u00a0 I renamed it as CSV1.\u00a0 I enabled CSV in the cluster (select the cluster, centre pane, it\u2019s a hyperlink in there).\u00a0 The MMC refreshed and now I had a Cluster Shared Volume item in the navigation pane on the left.\u00a0 I selected this and added storage: I selected the disk I\u2019d just added to the cluster.\u00a0 Badda bing, a CSV was created!\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The disk is now mounted as C:ClusterStorageVolume1.\u00a0 Additional CSV\u2019s would be Volume2, Volume3, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I can add VM\u2019s into the CSV.\u00a0 Note that any VM that was on the disk before being converted to CSV will be \u201ccorrupted&quot;, i.e. their storage location will have changed so Hyper-V no longer knows where they are.\u00a0 Make sure there are no VM\u2019s created on the disk before you convert it to a CSV.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also added 2 patches for W2008 R2 that I\u2019ve blogged about recently.\u00a0 1 is related to Nehelem processors and the other is related to power management, i.e. Core Parking.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it!\u00a0 Next I need to build node 2 and add it to the cluster.\u00a0 Then I get to try out Live Migration!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK \u2026 it is a single node cluster \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 But it is running!\u00a0 Live Migration is great and all but to be honest, the 2 things I want out of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V are Core Parking (to reduce our power bill) and Cluster Shared Volume.\u00a0 I really, really hated having to do per-LUN &hellip;
