This session will focus on IIS 7.5 (W2008 R2) and the free extensions to IIS 7.5.\u00a0 It is aimed to be a level 300 session.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve blogged about this before: The IIS team have been VERY busy.\u00a0 There are a lot of extensions to expand the platform for web beyond IIS focused for the IT Pro and Dev.<\/p>\n
Web Platform Installer<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n The Web Platform Installer<\/a> is a small little tool that makes it easy to download and install MS and 3rd party extensions, e.g. PHP.\u00a0 A demo now of the WPI v2.0.\u00a0 David shows that there is stuff like WordPress and PHP available here for download and auto-install.\u00a0 DasBlog is installed in the demo.<\/p>\n IIS 7.5<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n FTP 7.5 built in on W2008 R2.\u00a0 Includes a secure FTP option.\u00a0 Same applies for some of the other IIS7 extensions: built into 7.5.<\/p>\n W2008 R2<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n .NET in Server Core<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Couldn\u2019t do it in time for W2008.\u00a0 You get a subset of 2.0, 3.0 (WCF, WF) and 3.5 (WF additions from 3.5 and LINQ).\u00a0 Subset of ASP.NET support for IIS.\u00a0 PowerShell support and WoW64 for 32 bit applications.\u00a0 No WPF, small bit from CLR missing and a few bits from ASP.NET.<\/p>\n Use DISM to install .NET installed on Server Core.<\/p>\n Now we get a demo of setting up .NET on Server Core.\u00a0 The installer sits at around 99.8% for ages while .NET installs \u2013 we all know how long that installer typically runs for.\u00a0 Enable remote management.\u00a0 Install it and then enable it:<\/p>\n Extensions<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Possible because MS added an API to IIS.\u00a0 This allows MS and 3rd parties to add functionality to IIS.\u00a0 MS has added several so far that are free and supported.<\/p>\n FTP 7.5 built in.\u00a0 WebDAV 7.5 built in and using industry standards.<\/p>\n PowerShell<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Very marketing driven slide with little info.<\/p>\n We get a demo now of installing and configuring the IIS PowerShell module on Server Core followed by some cmdlet demos.<\/p>\n Web Deployment Tool<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Use this to change the location of a web site\/application or to copy it to other machines.\u00a0 This simplifies the task by packing the contents of the application, certs, databases, etc.\u00a0 You can migrate between IIS 6.0, 7.0 and 7.5.\u00a0 Integrated in IIS and Visual Studio 2010.\u00a0 Can synchronize changed data.\u00a0 Server admin rights not necessarily required.<\/p>\n We get a demo of this tool now.\u00a0 It was installed using the WPI.\u00a0 In the IIS manager you can right click on the site and select Deploy to get various options for the site.\u00a0 This fires up a wizard, e.g. for exporting a package of the site so you can deploy it to a different web server.\u00a0 This creates a zip file that you can use to transport the web application.\u00a0 This zip structure also happens to be in the format that the WPI uses to distribute applications.\u00a0 This means anyone can export and upload their site to MS for submission into the WPI.\u00a0 When you install this Web Deployment Tool on Core you need to install every component pretty much by the sounds of it.\u00a0 You then need to start the msdepsvc service using net start.\u00a0 From the remote IIS Management console you need to reconnect to the server to re-query for the available modules.<\/p>\n IIS URL Rewriter<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Any application like DNN often uses unfriendly long URL\u2019s.\u00a0 The purpose of the URL Rewriter is to give us human friendly URL\u2019s that resolve to the application URL\u2019s.<\/p>\n IIS Application Request Routing<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n V2.0 features edge caching.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been liking the look of this tool for a while.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t do high availability so things like the F5 devices still have a place.\u00a0 This V2 is still and RC.<\/p>\n Search Engine Optimisation<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Tools you can install on your server to boost your position in search engine ranking.\u00a0 It crawls your site and help with the SEO work normally done by experts.\u00a0 It runs from the IIS Manager.<\/p>\n Demo: he crawls a tiny bit of Google.com and finds lots of SEO violations!\u00a0 500 links searched and 768 violations found.<\/p>\n Others:<\/p>\n IIS Application Warm Up (in 7.5)<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n You can pre-load applications on your web servers so that they don\u2019t take ages to get going.<\/p>\n CLR Settings per Application Pool (in 7.5)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Some ASP.NET thing \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n Configuration Logging and Tracing (in 7.5)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Application Pool Identities (in 7.5)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n You can use domain accounts for this now.<\/p>\n Best Practices Analyser (in 7.5)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Make sure your server is secure and configured for best performance.\u00a0 You can run this tool to verify you have followed best practices.<\/p>\n Windows Web Server 2008 R2<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n The cheap but limited web server OS.\u00a0 W2008 R2 is 64 bit only and this edition supports 4 processors and 32GB RAM.\u00a0 Does not require CAL\u2019s or the External Connector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
