I\u2019ve just read one of the most uninformed or biased articles<\/a> about Hyper-V yet \u2013 outside of VMware of course.\u00a0 The author reports or makes 3 comments about the \u201cfailings\u201d of Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to large enterprise customers, he said there is very little hope because the "vast majority" of them have very little interest in switching.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

OK.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not a failing in Hyper-V even if this is true.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to get into decision making between products.\u00a0 I\u2019m too hungover for that.\u00a0 What I will say is that MS sells through their partners.\u00a0 What I\u2019ve seen in the last 2-3 months is partners start to get genuinely interested in Hyper-V now that CSV and Live Migration are here.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen it here at TechEd Europe 2009 too.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a technical problem for Hyper-V but I guess having 3 \u201cfailings\u201d makes for a better headline than 2.<\/p>\n

"\u2026 every physical host has a copy of Windows that is used as the parent OS. It manages the I\/O drivers and is home to any management agents that are installed\u201d \u2026 "so what you end up with is one big, fat, single point of failure."<\/em><\/p>\n

Hmm \u2026 so how do VMware, Xen, RedHat all manage their hypervisors?\u00a0 Oh yeah, they\u2019ve all got some sort of operating system or platform on the machine to manage it.\u00a0 Duh!<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time it’s necessary to patch the parent OS, it is also necessary to take down all the VMs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

No, not quite true.\u00a0 I have deployed patches that do not require reboots.\u00a0 True, they are rare but it does happen.\u00a0 And if you deploy a Hyper-V cluster (which you can do with the totally free Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 with CSV and Live Migration \u2013 something VMware does not have) then you simply Live Migrate the VM\u2019s to another host and then do your host operations.\u00a0 Heck, VMM 2008 R2 makes that easy with the \u201cmaintenance mode\u201d option for hosts which does all that leg work for you.\u00a0 By the way, a VMware \u201cpatch\u201d is way worse to deal with<\/a>.\u00a0 With Windows and Hyper-V I have Windows Update, WSUS\/ConfigMgr for downloading, testing and managing the deployment of my updates (including reports).\u00a0 It just so happens to be the same engine I use for managing updates for all of my MS software\/OS\u2019s.\u00a0 Windows happens to be on 72% of all servers in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
