Cluster Shared Volume is being discussed as I enter.\u00a0 CSV is only supported for Hyper-V.\u00a0 You cannot put SQL on a CSV.\u00a0 You can put SQL VM\u2019s on CSV.\u00a0 Still shared nothing.\u00a0 A Coordination Node owns the SCV and delegates rights.\u00a0 The Coordination Node role can fail over to other nodes in the cluster.\u00a0 While this happens there is a brief queuing of I\/O.<\/p>\n
The speaker stresses that CSV was written and tuned for Hyper-V.\u00a0 It is NOT to be used for anything else.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve recently heard of a case where a yellow box AV product scanning the CSV broke Live Migration.\u00a0 We know that DPM 2007 SP1 cannot back up CSV.\u00a0 There are significant differences obviously from normal NTFS because of these Hyper-V optimisations.<\/p>\n
I\/O Connectivity Fault Tolerance.\u00a0 If a node loses connection to the SAN then it can reroute I\/O via the Ethernet via the coordination node to the CSV.\u00a0 It\u2019s slow but it keeps you running until you use Live Migration to move VM\u2019s from the \u201cdown\u201d node or you can repair the issue.\u00a0 This is out of the box \u2013 no configuration required.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re advising people to use Serer Core for the parent partition.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to spot the people who only ever set stuff up and never live with it.\u00a0 There\u2019s more to life than the numbers of patches.\u00a0 There\u2019s the ability to fix things, upgrade things, configure VLAN\u2019s, etc.<\/p>\n
They are promoting Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.\u00a0 Yes, you can use lots of tools to manage it remotely from Windows 7.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 But that\u2019s only OK in a 100% pure MS world.\u00a0 For me Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is a VDI\/Linux solution.\u00a0 I\u2019d only ever run Windows server VM\u2019s on Enterprise\/Datacenter editions with a full installation.\u00a0 Enterprise\/Datacenter is effectively free with 4 or more Windows Server VM\u2019s and Full installation is not such a fat monster \u2013 it is also possible to configure\/troubleshoot hardware.<\/p>\n
There is a GUI now for configuring iSCSI in Server Core.<\/p>\n
We get a demo of building a CSV, a VM and doing Live Migration using the Hyper-V console.\u00a0 We then move onto VMM 2008 R2.<\/p>\n
