Microsoft has recently updated a TechNet page<\/a> to illustrate the configuration limits of Hyper-V in W2008 R2.<\/p>\n

Last week, I was asked by a local IT magazine to compare the limitations of VMware vSphere 4 to Hyper-V.\u00a0 But not the hosts; the virtual machines, i.e. how many processors, disks and RAM could I assign to a VM on either platform.\u00a0 I put together the numbers.<\/p>\n

So for example, a VM in Hyper-V can have up to 4 processors and 64GB of RAM VS 8 processors and 255GB RAM on vSphere.\u00a0 At first impressions: WOW!\u00a0 VMware tramples all over Microsoft.<\/p>\n

Hold on, let\u2019s get real.\u00a0 How many VM\u2019s have I ever run that needed that config?\u00a0 ZERO.\u00a0 The most RAM I\u2019ve put in a VM is 8GB.\u00a0 The most virtual processors was 2.\u00a0 If I needed 8 cores and 64GB of RAM I\u2019d question if the VM should be a VM at all!<\/p>\n

OK, there\u2019s cases where it would but they are rare.\u00a0 Microsoft runs MSDN\/TechNet on Hyper-V and those specs were high.\u00a0 Maybe you might have 1 VM per host for DR reasons: the VM is more portable and easier to replicate than a physical machine.<\/p>\n

But in the real world, most of us rarely have servers with huge needs.\u00a0 The only servers I\u2019ve run with lots of RAM were Citrix\/Terminal Servers and there\u2019s a loss of performance for larger implementations if virtualised.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t really care about those max limits for VM\u2019s.\u00a0 They\u2019re theoretical to me.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to get in any slagging match over them: I\u2019ll leave that to the sort of person who debates the merits of Picard VS Kirk \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
