Those Internet \u201cexperts\u201d, Eircom, finally confessed that they were victims of a DNS attack called cache poisoning.\u00a0 When your client goes to your ISP\u2019s DNS server to convert http:\/\/www.honestjoescars.com<\/a> into an IP address your DNS server might need to go to another DNS server to do the job.\u00a0 It will get the result, cache it and then pass the result back to you.\u00a0 It might hold that cached lookup for 24 hours and all subsequent client requests for http:\/\/www.honestjoescars.com<\/a> will get that cached result.<\/p>\n

Someone planted poison cache results on the Eircom DNS servers.\u00a0 When Eircom\u2019s customers tried to\u00a0browse certain sites they were sent elsewhere \u2026 to the sort of site you might not want to go to.\u00a0 Eircom fervently denied there was an attack.\u00a0 Everything was fine.\u00a0 But customers who changed their TCP settings to use the OpenDNS servers had no issues.\u00a0 Strange, eh?<\/p>\n
