{"id":9769,"date":"2009-07-14T14:52:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9769"},"modified":"2009-07-14T14:52:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"ballmer-at-the-wpc09-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9769","title":{"rendered":"Ballmer At The WPC09 Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It sounds like all the Windows RTM rumours are quashed.\u00a0 MS people are tweeting that this session will focus on MS online services such as Azure.\u00a0 I suspect some of the newer systems management online services will be talked about.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Muglia came on stage after everyone in the audience was named as partner of the year \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 He told us all about his holidays \u2026 I napped for a while.\u00a0 Ah, here we go.\u00a0 He\u2019s talking about the opportunities coming from his branch \u2026 server tools and System Center.\u00a0 He\u2019s going to talk about these and Azure\/cloud.<\/p>\n<p>We got a video on Hyper-V 2008 R2.\u00a0 Pretty truthful talking about skills and costs.\u00a0 Muglia demo\u2019d VMM 2008 R2.\u00a0 It\u2019s an evolution rather than a radical reinvention so there\u2019s no great leap in skills.\u00a0 Distributed applications on OpsMgr 2007 R2 was shown.\u00a0 He talked about the price difference between VMware and Hyper-V System Centre.\u00a0 Do the maths; it\u2019s real.\u00a0 He did a Live Migration using streaming media.\u00a0 I hate that .. it\u2019s lazy.\u00a0 Media Player buffers.\u00a0 Dave Northey in MS Ireland does a ping to the VM or a file copy from an XP VM.\u00a0 Very real test and always works.<\/p>\n<p>On to the cloud.\u00a0 He quickly talks about the cost reduction in administration.\u00a0 He talks about what MS does \u2026. hmm, we do that at work.\u00a0 Except we don\u2019t have to comply with the Patriot Act \u2026 doesn\u2019t matter where MS builds a data centre, they need to comply with the USA Patriot Act and therefore contravene the EU Data Protection Act.\u00a0 Advantages on hosting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Someone else does it<\/li>\n<li>Capacity on demand<\/li>\n<li>Potential global reach<\/li>\n<li>Expenses now an operating expense rather than a capital expense<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MS evolving Server and System Center based on hosting partners experience and feedback.\u00a0 To me, only OpsMgr is 100% ready.\u00a0 VMM is nearly there .. self service relies on the network being too open at the moment, e.g. remote console relies access to the host server and DNS lookup for the hosting infrastructure.\u00a0 DPM is totally unsuitable for the cloud as it stands.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dynamicdatacentertoolkit.com\/Alliance.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dynamic Datacenter Alliance<\/a> for hosters and system integrators was announced.\u00a0 There\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/dynamicdatacentertoolkit.com\" target=\"_blank\">Dynamic Data Center<\/a> toolkit.\u00a0 The DDC sounds like an evolution of an old toolkit.\u00a0 It\u2019s a layer above everything else.\u00a0 It\u2019s based on PowerShell.\u00a0 To join the alliance you must be a SPLA partner, attained the Hosting competency and deployed a \u201cDynamic Datacenter\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>SPLA Essentials is a new SPLA licensing scheme for hosting companies.\u00a0 Hopefully it will be a lot simpler.\u00a0 SPLA is a nightmare.\u00a0 Essentials is intended for smaller partners.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>\u20ac150 billion opportunity through 2013 in the hosting\/cloud business.\u00a0 95% of that will be through MS partners.<\/li>\n<li>Azure is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/press\/2009\/jul09\/07-14WPCAzurePR.mspx\" target=\"_blank\">launched<\/a> as of now.\u00a0 Free to use now.\u00a0 It goes commercial in November.\u00a0 The pricing scheme is consumption based, i.e. unpredictable.<\/li>\n<li>New version of SCE with VMM built in on the way later this year.<\/li>\n<li>Windows Server 2008 R2 to RTM in a matter of weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And on comes Steve Ballmer \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Singing Bing.\u00a0 He\u2019s goes on to talk \u2026 about stuff.\u00a0 He then brought in a guy from Fortune magazine to ask Steve some of the attendee questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is Microsoft building a rival to Google Chrome and how will it affect MS products and partners? Steve says he\u2019ll be respectful while giggling.\u00a0 Why announce it if it doesn\u2019t exist?\u00a0 MS is not going to have 2 client operating systems.\u00a0 50% of the time even when online we are working offline.<\/li>\n<li>Is it all about the browser or is it all about the OS.\u00a0 What to develop on?\u00a0 Stick to Windows, IE and Silverlight.\u00a0 That will give you best of both worlds.<\/li>\n<li>Apples advertising mocks any problems MS has.\u00a0 Did I\u2019m a PC.\u00a0 What is MS doing and will they use partners as a differentiator?\u00a0 Continue to tell the story of the PC, e.g. recent I\u2019m a PC that talks about the cost of the Mac.\u00a0 He likes the partner inclusion suggestion.<\/li>\n<li>Losing deals to LAMP, when will MS make it easy under one agreement with a reasonable price to compete?\u00a0 He took a note because he doesn\u2019t have an answer and asks the asker to email him \u2013 <a href=\"mailto:steveb@microsoft.com\">steveb@microsoft.com<\/a> \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>What are the characteristics of MS partners that will survive and thrive in this economy?\u00a0 Deliver compelling value to customers.\u00a0 Remind them after the delivery. <\/li>\n<li>Show how you can save them money and sell on the theme of growth?\u00a0 Do more with less.\u00a0 Customers trying to do \u201cwith less, do more\u201d, e.g. virtualization and cost cutting.<\/li>\n<li>What are the best solutions to stop piracy? The more you do to irradiate it, the more inconvenient your product becomes for the legitimate user.<\/li>\n<li>Government relations and antitrust \u2013 what is MS doing, e.g. what\u2019s behind the EU IE unbundling from Windows 7?\u00a0 Anti-trust and government relations are not necessarily related issues.\u00a0 Lots of successful relationships with governments.\u00a0 But antitrust laws \u2013 he says are quite separate.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Will there be an IT boom after the recession and will Windows 7 spark it? He thinks that if things even stayed as they are for 10 years, there would be some sort of demand growth for IT \u2013 unless there was another economic crash.\u00a0 Windows 7 might be the catalyst but could be the things like BI.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>How does MS see B2B social networking contributing to channel revenue?\u00a0 It\u2019s a big idea.\u00a0 Talks about Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 for colleague social networking in companies.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>MS Online Services will compete with MS Partners.\u00a0 How do partners prepare?\u00a0 Still work there for people.\u00a0 MS the only company selling directly, through partners and via cloud.\u00a0 Value add via partners still required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Final thoughts: he\u2019s excited to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.ie\/search?hl=en&amp;q=ritalin&amp;revid=915365587&amp;ei=tqtcSqfbFMfc-Qbf39XpDA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=revisions_narrow&amp;resnum=4&amp;ct=revision\"><b>Ritalin<\/b><\/a> levels.\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It sounds like all the Windows RTM rumours are quashed.\u00a0 MS people are tweeting that this session will focus on MS online services such as Azure.\u00a0 I suspect some of the newer systems management online services will be talked about.
