Google have announced<\/a> that they are developing an x86 operating system called Google Chrome Operating System.\u00a0 There\u2019s no real details and nothing to see yet.\u00a0 They\u2019re initially aiming at NetBooks and it will be Linux based.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a real threat to Windows dominance but it will probably take a certain percentage of geek machines.\u00a0 They\u2019ll make more announcements in the Autumn.<\/p>\n

I’ve been thinking about this a bit since I posted it.\u00a0 I attended a presentation by a senior MS security engineer earlier this year.\u00a0 He said they were impressed by how well Google had responded to early vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser.<\/p>\n

I think some people view Google as being some light side of The Force.\u00a0 Sorry to burst some bubbles but Google is a business and they obviously want world dominance in their market.\u00a0 To me, they strike me as being a little like Sun; lots of talk about open and cross platform but in the end, they only want 1 platform: theirs.<\/p>\n

It wouldn’t surprise if Chrome OS\u00a0turns out to be\u00a0a Chrome browser only OS.\u00a0 Want an Office product?\u00a0 You’ll have only one choice: Google Apps.\u00a0 Want an RSS reader?\u00a0 Google Reader.\u00a0 Want email?\u00a0\u00a0GMail.\u00a0 This might be fine for a tiny percentage of users but it won’t be good for the majority.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I may be way off on this but I certainly won’t mistake Google for being some altruistic force in the universe.\u00a0 They’ve got shareholders and profit&loss statements to think about.\u00a0 Dominance on mail, search, etc, means\u00a0dominance in Internet revenues.\u00a0 Apps is a subscription service so dominance there cleans up for them too.<\/p>\n

However, competition is good.\u00a0 Maybe this will shake things up on the desktop market price and product packaging-wise.\u00a0 My thoughts on that have been posted before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
