In This Market?  What?  Really?  Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an Internet gaming company here in Ireland, just off the M50 in south Dublin, that\u2019s been recruiting for a senior Windows engineer for at least 4 or 5 months.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been contacted several times by agencies but I\u2019ve no interest in them.\u00a0 Normally it\u2019s a place I would have been interested in: massive numbers of mission critical Windows servers including Windows 2008.\u00a0 Tip off words in their adverts mention car parking, gym membership, 24*7*365, Exchange 2007 and Sysinternals.\u00a0 That last one\u2019s a dead give away \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I blogged about them back in mid 2007.\u00a0 I had some experience of how they advertised for an architect and the opening was really for a break-fix engineer.\u00a0 I found that out in the last of 4 interviews.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>So why are they having trouble filling this job?\u00a0 That last thing I mentioned is a clue of what they\u2019re like.\u00a0 I know some people who\u2019ve interviewed there in the past and came out feeling bitter like I did.\u00a0 I know someone (let\u2019s call him Bob) who did their phone interview and was then asked to come in for 4 in-person interviews \u2026 at 2PM on the following Monday.\u00a0 Bob couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 He has to give 1 months notice for time off.\u00a0 Skiving off from work isn\u2019t in his nature but the HR person was insistent that the interview would not be after hours.\u00a0 It seems she wanted to recruit someone for their senior position who had no problem dossing from work.\u00a0 When the Monday plan wasn\u2019t going to work (after 1 month notice being explained).\u00a0 Here\u2019s what she offered: \u201cOK, we\u2019ll interview everyone else.\u00a0 If nothing works out then we\u2019ll call you in for the following Monday\u201d.\u00a0 The only response Bob could give her \u201cFine, we\u2019ll then book the day off 1 month from the point you call me to say that no one else was suitable\u201d.\u00a0 Stupid, eh?\u00a0 All because Ms. Thing wanted to finish work at 17:30.\u00a0 That brought an end to his dealings with the company.<\/p>\n<p>Unemployment is at over 12% in Ireland right now.\u00a0 We have a 4 million population.\u00a0 Lots of those have been skilled employees with great skills.\u00a0 There\u2019s no shortage of available people and others who are hunting for more secure work.\u00a0 Any company that\u2019s been failing to fill a position after 4 or 5 months must look at itself and ask some serious questions.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advertise the job that really is open.\u00a0 Don\u2019t back load the surprises that spring up in the last interview, the contract or the first day of work.<\/li>\n<li>A person cannot know everything.\u00a0 You have a laundry list of requirements so look for people who have similar skills that can transfer, e.g. they can learn new skills.\u00a0 A handful of people in Ireland know the HP RDP stuff.\u00a0 Consider people who know WDS because they aren\u2019t too different.<\/li>\n<li>Be flexible.\u00a0 Asking people to take a risk by dossing from work in the middle of the day is ridiculous.\u00a0 People are in fear for their jobs so make allowances.\u00a0 Do you really want to hire someone who will doss from your company?\u00a0 Are you going to \u201cchange them\u201d?\u00a0 LMAO!\u00a0 I suspect in this case that the HR person was at fault.\u00a0 We IT people are used to working late.\u00a0 HR \u2026 well they <em>clock out<\/em> at 17:30 (oh that\u2019s 5:30PM, dear).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an Internet gaming company here in Ireland, just off the M50 in south Dublin, that\u2019s been recruiting for a senior Windows engineer for at least 4 or 5 months.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been contacted several times by agencies but I\u2019ve no interest in them.\u00a0 Normally it\u2019s a place I would have been interested in: massive numbers &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9709\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Having Trouble Recruiting?
