This is beyond stupid and irresponsible now.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of seeing these stories.\u00a0 A few days ago we heard that 15 laptops were stolen from the HSE, 2 of which were unencrypted and contained personal information of patients.\u00a0 Now we hear<\/a> that 4 unencrypted laptops with 75,000 customer\u2019s banking details were stolen from Bord G\u00e1is.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

What the hell is new about encrypting laptops anymore?\u00a0 It should be a matter of practice: Buy\/build a laptop and encrypt it.\u00a0 But oh no, these lazy organizations don\u2019t want to do that or some inept managers just don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

Brendam Drumm of the HSE should be sacked (without his massive pay rise) anyway.\u00a0 But we were promised all laptops would be encrypted by September of last year.\u00a0 Was that done?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Who would think a government agent would lie or fail like that?\u00a0 SACK HIM!<\/p>\n

We need some new laws:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It should be mandatory to encrypt all business laptops by law.\u00a0 Trying to get just those with personal data hasn\u2019t worked.\u00a0 Data is movement is too fluid.<\/li>\n
  2. There should be employment law protection for whistle blowers; that\u2019s needed anyway, e.g. the financial system.<\/li>\n
  3. It should be a mandatory requirement for the Data Protection Commissioner to prosecute the directors of companies where unencrypted laptops are stolen.\u00a0 There will be a fixed, non-negotiable punishment.\u00a0 That\u2019ll get \u2018em worried.\u00a0 <\/li>\n
  4. Failure to prosecute will be a prosecutable offense regardless or not if the data protection commissioner is still in office or not.\u00a0 Prosecution will be mandatory as will the punishment.\u00a0 That\u2019ll take care of the cronyism that\u2019s rife in our country.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Organisations like the HSE probably have MS Software Assurance.\u00a0 If they then then deploy MS\u2019s Windows Enterprise edition and enable BitLocker.\u00a0 If not, go have a look at a 3rd party solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
