{"id":9677,"date":"2009-06-05T10:47:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9677"},"modified":"2009-06-05T10:47:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"vmm-2008-wont-migrate-vm-after-w2008-sp2-install","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9677","title":{"rendered":"VMM 2008 Won\u2019t Migrate VM After W2008 SP2 Install"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve upgraded the first of our hosts in our Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V cluster to Service Pack 2.\u00a0 I wanted to move VM\u2019s to this host so I could upgrade the next host to SP2.\u00a0 I opened VMM 2008 and attempted a migration of the first VM.\u00a0 I was offered a \u201czero star\u201d score on the migration, i.e. VMM refused to do it.\u00a0 The reason given was:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yyjwha.blu.livefilestore.com\/y1mD_mavlEYwNu9-adPSf871fGHlSClkO8WB0GPhhwH4g50UqTjvfUurvA84qb1gwpAqmvgOaywNprhpI45zxcCO4OzvVwN7qs4SUp2aWlZHLJQhmtDdn_tQYL9zIuuMX90wUu1Jsbazr_t_-i7wHV_PQ\/image[3] 232A81D4.png\" rel=\"WLPP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom:0px;border-left:0px;display:block;float:none;margin-left:auto;border-top:0px;margin-right:auto;border-right:0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/yyjwha.blu.livefilestore.com\/y1mP8GaxsUpzXiV2_q7HAPeHN1QSZBsh70oJAKcgNKPyARUezkrJSuou5KoMIZjeR5UnceQ8OMsFzbNBo45NV46wZRVEeX4geaoZrJRKRzMkPuOwSQ79_SqCGgQ2asFUIyvORo5KmWkBsO6Py8lkheuWw\/image_thumb[1] 4E4ECD41.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"62\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, VMM 2008 refuses to migrate a VM from a W2008 SP1 Hyper-V host to a W2008 SP2 Hyper-V host.\u00a0 That\u2019s not good for upgrade scenarios.\u00a0 These are production VM\u2019s so I can\u2019t go about doing stops and restarts.<\/p>\n<p>My workaround was simple.\u00a0 Bypass VMM and go straight into the Failover Clustering MMC.\u00a0 I connected to the cluster and migrated the resource for the VM\u2019s in question.\u00a0 That worked perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s my planned (at the moment) Hyper-V cluster Service Pack upgrade strategy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply the VMM 2008 rollup (see my recent posts) to the VMM server<\/li>\n<li>Migrate VM\u2019s to leave a single host (host 1) with no VM\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>Upgrade host 1 to SP2<\/li>\n<li>Wait a day or two<\/li>\n<li>Use the Failover Cluster MMC to migrate VM\u2019s from host 2 to host 1<\/li>\n<li>Upgrade host 2 to SP2<\/li>\n<li>Repeat steps 4 to 6 as required for additional hosts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It&#8217;s worked for me on two non-critical VM&#8217;s.\u00a0 I&#8217;m checking with MS if they&#8217;d be 100% happy with this.\u00a0 Until I hear back, I&#8217;m pausing things.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve upgraded the first of our hosts in our Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V cluster to Service Pack 2.\u00a0 I wanted to move VM\u2019s to this host so I could upgrade the next host to SP2.\u00a0 I opened VMM 2008 and attempted a migration of the first VM.\u00a0 I was offered a \u201czero star\u201d score on &hellip;
