For a moment, we\u2019ll ignore the fact that the soon-to-be-released and FREE Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 includes failover clustering and Live Migration.\u00a0 That’ 100% kills the argument.<\/em><\/p>\n Let\u2019s just look at the current release of Hyper-V.\u00a0 To get failover clustering you need either Windows Server Enterprise 2008 or Windows Server Datacenter 2008.<\/p>\n OK.\u00a0 Now lets do some comparisons:<\/p>\n I\u2019m using rounded prices.\u00a0 VMware ESX is actually over \u20ac5000 per host.\u00a0 I sourced MS pricing from Elara.ie<\/a>.\u00a0 Windows Standard = \u20ac1,000 and Windows Enterprise = \u20ac4,200.<\/em><\/p>\n VMware ESX<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac9,400<\/p>\n Citrix Xen<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac4,400<\/p>\n Microsoft Hyper-V with Failover Clustering<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac4,200<\/p>\n How exactly has Microsoft ripped anyone off here?\u00a0 Yes, currently Hyper-V doesn\u2019t have Live Migration or Cluster Shared Volume but the RTM of R2 includes those.\u00a0 Expect the RTM in July and GA in October.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s push this up some.\u00a0 Few of us run 4 VM\u2019s on a host.\u00a0 Let\u2019s run 28 VM\u2019s.<\/p>\n VMware ESX<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac35,800<\/p>\n Citrix Xen<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac30,800<\/p>\n Microsoft Hyper-V with Failover Clustering<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac29,400<\/p>\n Whoops, why don\u2019t we just use Datacenter edition?\u00a0 This host server might only have 2 CPU\u2019s but let\u2019s assume it has 4 6-core CPU\u2019s.\u00a0 Using HP pricing<\/a> at \u20ac2,820 per CPU, we\u2019ll see how pricey MS is.<\/p>\n Microsoft Hyper-V with Failover Clustering<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n Total Cost? \u20ac11,280<\/p>\n I guess I\u2019m still struggling to see how Microsoft is ripping people off here.\u00a0 And I think that\u2019s totally crushed the argument that MS virtualisation is too expensive.<\/p>\n Oh but I\u2019m not finished!<\/p>\n I think I\u2019ve said enough on that one.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty clear that MS virtualisation is economic.\u00a0 My experience is that it performs superbly, it\u2019s stable and the management provided by OpsMgr and VMM 2008 is superior to what I experienced with Virtual Center for ESX.<\/p>\n I should also note, these are MS off-the-shelf prices for Ireland.\u00a0 Local prices will probably be cheaper (this is an expensive place to shop) and volume licenses will definitely be cheaper.<\/p>\n EDIT #1:<\/p>\n Anthony Crotty<\/a> contact me with this link<\/a>.\u00a0 System Center CAL’s will be changing on July 1st.\u00a0 The Enterprise CAL will only cover 4 VM’s and a new Datacenter per processor CAL will cover unlimited VM’s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I just read a comment about how Microsoft ripped people off to get virtualisation with clustering.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great bit of VMware marketing FUD so let\u2019s look at the real costs.
