{"id":9583,"date":"2009-04-03T15:18:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9583"},"modified":"2009-04-03T15:18:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"microsoft-mythbusters-top-10-vmware-myths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9583","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Mythbusters: Top 10 VMware Myths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft is playing cheeky again \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 They\u2019ve posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/video\/en\/us\/details\/f8c3314f-c82d-4f8d-8b19-6a59733670f8?vp_evt=eref&amp;vp_video=Microsoft+Mythbusters:+Top+10+VMware+Myths\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> aiming to debunk some VMware commentary about virtualisation: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>No Live Migration (aka VMotion): Coming in Windows Server 2008 R2 <\/li>\n<li>No cluster file system: Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) coming in Windows Server 2008 R2 \u2013 it\u2019s a requirement for Live Migration <\/li>\n<li>Version 1.0, unreliable and un-scalable: I can personally say that\u2019s a bunch of crap.\u00a0 A lot of MS\u2019s site is running on Hyper-V. <\/li>\n<li>Low Performance: Check my recent blog posts.\u00a0 More rubbish <\/li>\n<li>MS footprint is very big compared to VMware\u2019s: VMware has a small disk footprint.\u00a0 ESX is on par with Hyper-V for host RAM requirements from my experience. <\/li>\n<li>VMware claims broad hardware support: Hmm.\u00a0 Check their HCL.\u00a0 You can run Hyper-V on anything you can run W2008 x64 on and can enable DEP and CPU virtualisation assistance in the BIOS. <\/li>\n<li>End-End System Management: Hyper-V easily wins here.\u00a0 End-end and top-bottom management with VMM 2008 and OpsMgr 2007.\u00a0 Throw in DPM for backup and ConfigMgr for deployment and you\u2019ve got a complete integrated solution. <\/li>\n<li>Memory Overcommit: ESX has this.\u00a0 Hyper-V does not.\u00a0 They wanted to do it in R2 but couldn\u2019t get it done.\u00a0 It\u2019s dangerous if not managed correctly \u2013 there\u2019s anecdotes of one VPS hosting company in Ireland over \u201cbursting\u201d resources and hurting their service badly.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see it in the next version of Hyper-V <em>after<\/em> W2008 R2.\u00a0 I think MS fudge a bit on this answer in the video. <\/li>\n<li>Pricing: MS hammers VMware on this.\u00a0 ESX is around \u20ac5,300 in Ireland.\u00a0 Windows Server Enterprise is around \u20ac3,700.\u00a0 Plus Enterprise includes free OS licensing for 4 VM\u2019s!\u00a0 Say you want to run 4 Windows Standard Edition VM\u2019s (around \u20ac800 each).\u00a0 The price on VMware is 5300 + (4 * 800) = \u20ac8,500.\u00a0 The price on Hyper-V is \u20ac3,700. <\/li>\n<li>You <em>Need<\/em> VMware: I say pick whatever suits you best.\u00a0 MS gives you an integrated solution and simplifies things.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a Citrix house go for Xen.\u00a0 Right now, if you need VMotion or a very broad guest OS support then go VMware.\u00a0 Make your own decision and don\u2019t buy the marketing FUD.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft is playing cheeky again \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 They\u2019ve posted a video aiming to debunk some VMware commentary about virtualisation: No Live Migration (aka VMotion): Coming in Windows Server 2008 R2 No cluster file system: Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) coming in Windows Server 2008 R2 \u2013 it\u2019s a requirement for Live Migration Version 1.0, unreliable and un-scalable: &hellip;
