{"id":9569,"date":"2009-03-31T10:14:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9569"},"modified":"2009-03-31T10:14:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"brian-madden-why-microsoft-doesnt-live-client-hypervisors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9569","title":{"rendered":"Brian Madden: Why Microsoft Doesn\u2019t Live Client Hypervisors"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Brian Madden (virtualisation commentator) has <a title=\"posted\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brianmadden.com\/blogs\/brianmadden\/archive\/2009\/03\/31\/why-microsoft-doesn-t-like-client-hypervisors.aspx\">posted<\/a> a blog entry where he discusses Microsoft\u2019s position on client hypervisors. <\/p>\n<p>I have to say, I would have liked a Windows 7 Hyper-V because I could ditch VMware Workstation.\u00a0 Workstation dominates the client market and rightly so.\u00a0 Virtual PC cannot come close in terms of functionality.\u00a0 My only problem with Workstation is that it can screw up the complicated Windows Vista\/7 networking setup from time to time \u2013 the restoration point feature comes in handy. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m wondering if Microsoft even cares about virtualisation on the client.\u00a0 Their strategy for rapid provisioning of a \u201ccanned\u201d client is Native VHD.\u00a0 Windows 7 has a tiny hidden boot partition and the usual C: drive.\u00a0 The default installation is that the OS goes into C: as usual.\u00a0 With Native VHD, you can leave the C: drive empty and deploy a VHD (virtual hard disk \u2013 the same type used with Hyper-V) manually or using WDS.\u00a0 You can then configure the boot partition to <em>surface <\/em>(mount) the VHD and boot from it.\u00a0 It\u2019s virtualisation in a way but you\u2019re limited to booting up into that one VM, one at a time. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love to see a version of Hyper-V for the client that would allow us to boot up a limited installation, e.g. 8GB RAM of VM\u2019s or 6 VM\u2019s or whatever.\u00a0 Or maybe alter Virtual PC to make it compete with VMware Workstation which it trails by a long way right now.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Madden (virtualisation commentator) has posted a blog entry where he discusses Microsoft\u2019s position on client hypervisors.
