{"id":9476,"date":"2009-02-26T18:10:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9476"},"modified":"2009-02-26T18:10:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"vdi-and-how-it-will-affect-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9476","title":{"rendered":"VDI And How It Will Affect IT"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>I just <a title=\"read\" href=\"http:\/\/vmblog.com\/archive\/2009\/02\/26\/vdi-will-drive-a-revolution-in-it-support.aspx\">read<\/a> this: <\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe increasing move to a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) could result in the disappearance of traditional 2nd line IT support\u00a0 and force 3rd line teams \u2026 to embrace an increasingly customer-centric environment\u201d.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/cid-000900f45ce9556d.events.live.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoke<\/a> about VDI last night and the impact it would have on IT.\u00a0 I agree that VDI will have an impact but I\u2019m not sure I agree that we\u2019ll see 3rd line IT becoming more customer facing.\u00a0 If you\u2019re in 3rd line you do have a role to play when calls get escalated but I think we\u2019ll see less IT involvement with the desktop and less of 3rd line interacting with the customer. <\/p>\n<p>If we do things right then we\u2019re trying to take IT out of the equation.\u00a0 We\u2019re that \u201cdelaying\u201d factor in the business getting on with things.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I like SharePoint.\u00a0 We can delegate admin rights to business (site and\/or data) owners so they can decide who has what access.\u00a0 Gone is the hassle with file shares where IT is left to decide who has what access (and we\u2019re the worst people for that) or to try get someone to fill in paperwork (or InfoPath forms). <\/p>\n<p>Take some like App-V on VDI.\u00a0 You can automatically deploy new VM\u2019s to new users.\u00a0 Users sign in and go to a portal to request non-standard software.\u00a0 The budget owner (non-IT) says \u201cyay\u201d or \u201cnay\u201d and the user gets their software.\u00a0 If something breaks in the s\/w the usual 1st line is called in. <\/p>\n<p>I really think we\u2019ll see users interacting with IT even less.\u00a0 When they do have a problem they\u2019ll deal with that 1st line.\u00a0 The 2nd line probably be merged into the 1st line and have less work to do thanks to the automation.\u00a0 I don\u2019t see the 3rd line doing anything more than it was. <\/p>\n<p>But this is all assuming people adopt automation.\u00a0 I had to leave an interesting discussion on that subject last night to catch the last train home.\u00a0 Ireland is pretty weird because IT automation just has not taken off here.\u00a0 Some businesses deploy the software but never get much further than that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen systems like Unicenter and SMS just gather dust, wasting away while IT departments struggle with the problems that the systems would fix.\u00a0 I suspect part of it is down to training, part of it is down to lack of interest by individuals and a good deal down to how the business undervalues IT and hires unsuitable skills for advanced engineering.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just read this: \u201cThe increasing move to a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) could result in the disappearance of traditional 2nd line IT support\u00a0 and force 3rd line teams \u2026 to embrace an increasingly customer-centric environment\u201d.
