{"id":9363,"date":"2009-01-23T15:11:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9363"},"modified":"2009-01-23T15:11:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"how-to-test-outbound-mail-flow-with-iis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9363","title":{"rendered":"How To Test Outbound Mail Flow With IIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked to see if there was a problem with an IIS SMTP server.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been asked this one many times before in the past.\u00a0 The first thing I do is to check DNS (just like with Active Directory).\u00a0 I verified I could look up external MX records.\u00a0 Next I checked firewall rules and connectivity.\u00a0 I could telnet to an external mail server on port 25, e.g. <em>telnet mailsvr.destdomain.com 25<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Next up is a tool called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?familyid=BC1881C7-925D-4A29-BD42-71E8563C80A9&amp;displaylang=en\" target=\"_blank\">SMTPDiag<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve used this one a good bit for this sort of problem.\u00a0 You need to know which things to ignore in this scenario where there is no Exchange server.\u00a0 In the past when I was with a hosting company we had a customer who reported an issue with his server sending email.\u00a0 SMTPDiag did some tests to verify SMTP was OK and then sent test mails.\u00a0 The destination that was reported in the trouble ticket bounced the tests with an SMTP code &#8230; the sender was being rejected for being a spammer.\u00a0 It turns out he probably was being identified as a spammer due to the large amounts of mail he sent.\u00a0 In my case today, everything was good.<\/p>\n<p>The final step was to <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/?id=297700\" target=\"_blank\">manually send a mail<\/a>.\u00a0 You can use notepad to write an email and drop it into the SMTP pickup folder.\u00a0 Open notepad and add something like:<\/p>\n<p><em>to:tbill@externaldomainname.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>from:testuser@internaldomain.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>subject:This is a test.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>this is a test.
