{"id":9348,"date":"2009-01-20T12:10:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9348"},"modified":"2009-01-20T12:10:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"backing-up-hyper-v-vms-using-vss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9348","title":{"rendered":"Backing Up Hyper-V VM&#8217;s Using VSS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are backing up Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Virtual Machines using Volume Shadow Copy Service then you should check out a new <a title=\"hotfix\" href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;959962\">hotfix<\/a>.\u00a0 It rectifies 3 issues:<\/p>\n<h5>Issue 1<\/h5>\n<p>If you back up a Hyper-V virtual machine that has multiple volumes, the backup may fail. If you check the VMMS event log after the backup failure occurs, the following event is logged:<br \/>Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin <br \/>Source: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS <br \/>Event ID: 10104 <br \/>Level: Error <br \/>Description: <br \/>Failed to revert to VSS snapshot on one or more virtual hard disks of the virtual machine &#8216;%1&#8217;. (Virtual machine ID %2) <\/p>\n<h5>Issue 2<\/h5>\n<p>The Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer may enter an unstable state if a backup of the Hyper-V virtual machine fails. If you run the vssadmin list writers command, the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer is not listed.
