Fixed in R2.\u00a0 This account uses SSH for discovery and 1 diagnostic.\u00a0 Monitoring is done through WS-Management.\u00a0 You can limit this account to certain hosts to prevent crack attempts with unauthenticated health service installations.\u00a0 This can even be filtered to objects or groups or classes in the OpsMgr database.<\/li>\n<li>Create Run As Accounts<\/li>\n<li>Create profiles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Discovery Wizard<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Built on OpsMgr discovery framework<\/li>\n<li>Fully integrated &#8211; choose between windows, Unix\/Linux and network devices.<\/li>\n<li>The discovery is moved inR2 into the Administration space of the console.\u00a0 This was done to hide functionality from the operators.<\/li>\n<li>For Unix we can search by IP, DNS name or IP range.\u00a0 SSH is required on the box for this discovery otherwise it fails.\u00a0 SSH not used if an agent already exists.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>There is functionality to allow for SSH via low privilege user and SU to root &#8211; tick box and an extra password.<\/li>\n<li>Now we import the management packs &#8211; downloaded from the catalogue (when published).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>What Can We Do Now?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We can monitor Application\/Service, hardware, operating system (including daemons) and heartbeat.<\/li>\n<li>Note only 6 daemons are monitored by default because every Unix\/Linux box is different.\u00a0 Bespoke discovery available.<\/li>\n<li>Heartbeat: alert if machine down, DNS name changes or agent cert expires.<\/li>\n<li>Discovers logical disks, NIC&#8217;s, processors, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Monitors health, performance, utilisation, availability, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Seems identical to Windows\u00a0 monitoring on the face of it.\u00a0\u00a0 Completely integrated.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge is integrated in the MP.\u00a0 The CPE team has Unix\/Linux background and they hired <em>real<\/em> *nix administrators.<\/li>\n<li>Log file (text search) monitoring: SU usage, root logon failure, critical authentication failures, break-in attempts, SSH authentication failure, successful login to root.\u00a0 Completely extensible beyond this, e.g. you do this or third party.<\/li>\n<li>New MP templates: log file and service (daemon).\u00a0 You use these to create custom *nix monitoring.<\/li>\n<li>Rails proved to be a PITA to monitor via text log.\u00a0 A tool MS used to test is included in the rule wizard.<\/li>\n<li>Using a template you can monitor process or daemons not included in the default set of 6.\u00a0 You have to apply this to a server and maybe a group of servers.<\/li>\n<li>Daemon checking happens every 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>The fault resolution includes a hyperlink for applying the fix via Tasks; just like Windows.<\/li>\n<li>If the WS-Man daemon (the &quot;agent&quot;) goes offline then it can be restarted via SSH<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Reporting<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are reports.<\/li>\n<li>If you import reports but they&#8217;re not visible then refresh the site.<\/li>\n<li>Reporting works just like with Windows, i.e. seamless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>How It Works<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This works via a polling mechanism.<\/li>\n<li>You can customise the polling times for different systems.<\/li>\n<li>The providers on the monitored box filter events and then share with the polling management server.<\/li>\n<li>The unofficial scalability: 200 Unix per management server was the aim.\u00a0 They hit 600 before optimising the code.\u00a0 No application management packs in that test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Beta<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Out now.<\/li>\n<li>New one in a couple of weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Application Monitoring<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MS are not writing Oracle management packs, MySQL, etc.<\/li>\n<li>MS leaving this to partners or vendors.<\/li>\n<li>Authoring of management packs is the same as with Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Discovery, scripting and data extraction is dependant on the application\/OS.<\/li>\n<li>Partners: Novell for SUSE &#8211;
