{"id":9245,"date":"2008-11-05T12:50:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9245"},"modified":"2008-11-05T12:50:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"day-3-microsoft-system-center-virtual-machine-manager-advanced-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9245","title":{"rendered":"Day 3: Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Advanced Features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The speaker is Edwin Yuen, Senior Technical Product Manager from MS.\u00a0 This is a level 300 session compared to yesterday&#8217;s level 200.\u00a0 See that post.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of people in the room are running VMware.\u00a0 Maybe 20% of those are looking at using VMM 2008 to manage ESX &#8211; hence get a better management experience, not necessarily as complete as with Hyper-V.<\/p>\n<p>Here we go again on Powershell \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 See previous posts.<\/p>\n<p>The focus here will be on the management of Virtual Center using VMM 2008.\u00a0 High Availability for Hyper-V using VMM &#8211; you need to know what to do in storage\/Windows and what to do in VMM.\u00a0 VMM can&#8217;t do everything, e.g. provision LUN&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>VMware<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Support for VMware covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>VC 2.5<\/li>\n<li>VC 2.0.1<\/li>\n<li>ESX 3.5<\/li>\n<li>ESX 3.0.2<\/li>\n<li>ESX 3i *new to RTM*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>VMM will be the manager of managers.\u00a0 You can have many VC instances managed by a single VMM 2008.\u00a0 Uses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>VI SDK API&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>SFTP: File operations on ESX 3.5 and 3.0.2.<\/li>\n<li>HTTPS: File operations on 3i<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secure mode is on my default.\u00a0 This uses SSL for management using the VI SSL cert.<\/li>\n<li>Host credential operations requires root SSH to be enabled. to move certain operations from &quot;OK (Limited)&quot; to &quot;OK&quot; (status of ESX host in console): power state, VM configuration, VMotion, Checkpoint, save state and migration.\u00a0 Add credentials into the properties (security tab)\u00a0 of the host in VMM to complete the configuration of the host.<\/li>\n<li>Enabling PRO on ESX is possible &#8211; that surprises me to be honest and is impressive. You should not turn on PRO and DRS.\u00a0 They will definitely conflict with each causing constant VMotion of VM&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>There is a new network diagram view in the RTM release for 2008.<\/li>\n<li>Do your host\/VM installs in VC and then do day-day operations in VMM 2008.\u00a0 Resource Pools are manageable within VMM.<\/li>\n<li>You can do P2v and V2V of a VMware VM to Hyper-V.<\/li>\n<li>Powershell can be used to manage VMware.<\/li>\n<li>Do your VMware trouble shooting from within VC.<\/li>\n<li>VMotion is referred to as Live Migration in VMM 2008.\u00a0 Usable from within the console.\u00a0 VC is still a requirement for VMotion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clustering Hyper V Step by Step<\/p>\n<p>In server:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Configure Node (BIOS, Ent\/DC per node), add failover clustering.<\/li>\n<li>Storage: (iSCSI or Fibre Channel, Storage must suppoort persistent reservations, recommended 1 GUID LUN per VM).<\/li>\n<li>Networking: 2 NIC&#8217;s recommended.<\/li>\n<li>Add\/remove nodes to\/from cluster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In VMM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add host cluster<\/li>\n<li>VMM handles all future node additions\/removals<\/li>\n<li>Surface available disk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clustering the VM i now a tick box in the properties of the VM.\u00a0 Use intelligent placement strategy to place it on a suitable host.\u00a0 A VM can be moved to a library but it retains the HA property for when you return it to the cluster, e.g. a template of a highly available VM.\u00a0 If you tick the box on a VM that&#8217;s not on a cluster then you&#8217;re prompted by intelligent placement (IP) to move the VM to a suitable host.<\/p>\n<p>Refresh the cluster in VMM after adding storage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The speaker is Edwin Yuen, Senior Technical Product Manager from MS.\u00a0 This is a level 300 session compared to yesterday&#8217;s level 200.\u00a0 See that post.
