{"id":9244,"date":"2008-11-05T10:30:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9244"},"modified":"2008-11-05T10:30:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"day-3-invite-only-power-consumption-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9244","title":{"rendered":"Day 3: Invite Only Power Consumption Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a research meeting for MS to drive strategy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PC numbers vary between 10 and 55,000.\n<\/li>\n<li>Laptop penetration: the biggest company here is 40% laptop, 60% desktop.\u00a0 All of us above 25%.\u00a0 Everyone allows roaming computing but some with corporate policies.\n<\/li>\n<li>Everyone but me is on XP.\u00a0 They&#8217;re waiting until Windows 7.\u00a0 Good idea based on the features being offered: minimise project time to get those benefits.\n<\/li>\n<li>The big company is green: carbon neutral factory using wind turbine power &#8230;. except when it isn&#8217;t windy of course :).\u00a0 New data centres will reuse heat.\u00a0 They own the 3 turbines and got the local power company to invest: excess power is exported to the power company.\n<\/li>\n<li>There is agreement that there isn&#8217;t &quot;green it&quot;.\u00a0 Call it greener IT.\n<\/li>\n<li>Data centres are at 19 degrees not for servers but for people.\u00a0 Servers will run at 30 degrees Celsius with no problems.\n<\/li>\n<li>Finland data centres are regulated into consuming more power, etc, e.g. underground which makes cooling harder.\n<\/li>\n<li>The big company is a car company.\u00a0 One of their 3 aims as a corporation is to be greener.\u00a0 They take it very seriously.\n<\/li>\n<li>Some companies using centralised power management, some not.\n<\/li>\n<li>Measurement of power (watt meters per machine) 50% usage for tests.\n<\/li>\n<li>Company politics are often an obstacle.\n<\/li>\n<li>On the data centre we stressed the need to be able to optimise beyond the server: storage, network, all OS&#8217;s, etc.\n<\/li>\n<li>Measurement: we suggested OpsMgr for monitoring H\/W generated metrics and ConfigMgr.\n<\/li>\n<li>Asked if we had interest in application virtualisation for server applications (not terminal services).\u00a0 Interesting but there&#8217;s a trust and an OEM support issue.\u00a0 Would have to be out a while and trusted.\u00a0 Probably only for lightweight stuff that can exist on one server.\u00a0 Removes compatibility issues.\n<\/li>\n<li>Machine recycling?\u00a0 Somewhat.\u00a0 Ireland not much unfortunately.\u00a0 Lack of trust on the disk data.\u00a0 75% of the attendees donate to charity or given to dedicated recycle firms (paid service).\u00a0 There is a story about recycled machines disappearing on a journey to recycle.\u00a0 No idea if the disks were wiped or not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a research meeting for MS to drive strategy.
