{"id":9229,"date":"2008-10-31T21:16:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9229"},"modified":"2008-10-31T21:16:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"its-finally-started-dell-lays-off-400","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9229","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Finally Started: Dell Lays Off 400"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Dell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.ie\/national-news\/dell-axes-400-contract-staff-sparking-fears-of-further-cuts-1514644.html\">laid off 400 staff<\/a> in the Limerick plant today.\u00a0 That follows up:<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The construction of the plant in Poland that started at least 7 years ago.\n<\/li>\n<li>The consolidation of offices in Dublin with reduced floorspace.\n<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB122142787661033779.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\">stories <\/a>in the Wall Street Journal about Dell selling the manufacturing plant in Limerck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s no doubt what Dell&#8217;s plans are.\u00a0 We&#8217;re told the plant in Poland is 2.5 times\u00a0bigger than all the floorspace in Ireland.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t blame Dell or Poland.\u00a0 A huge amount of their staff in Ireland are probably Polish.\u00a0 Why hire Polish people in Ireland when you can hire them in Poland?\u00a0\u00a0 You pay them less and they&#8217;ll also have a better quality of life.\u00a0 Yeah &#8230; the cost of living has rocketed here (it just got worse thanks to the budget) and salary demands have obviously matched the rate of inflation.\u00a0 Dell really has had no choice.\n<\/p>\n<p>We also have to consider that there&#8217;s stories of IT spending freezing with the global economy downturn.\u00a0 Dell will obviously want to react to that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dell laid off 400 staff in the Limerick plant today.\u00a0 That follows up: \u00a0 The construction of the plant in Poland that started at least 7 years ago.
