{"id":9172,"date":"2008-08-28T17:35:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9172"},"modified":"2008-08-28T17:35:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"installing-an-opsmgr-2008-agent-on-windows-server-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9172","title":{"rendered":"Installing An OpsMgr 2008 Agent on Windows Server 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went about doing this today and to be honest, the instructions are non-existent.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need a bunch of <a href=\"http:\/\/joeelway.spaces.live.com\/blog\/cns!2095EAC3772C41DB!976.entry\">updates<\/a>.\u00a0 Note that the hotfix rollup includes X64 and X86 updates and there are individual downloads for the x86 and x64 versions on the other KB&#8217;s.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how you can get an Operations Manager 2007 agent working on W2008:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download and &quot;install&quot; KB954049 (a hotfix rollup).\u00a0 This &quot;install&quot; is a messy extraction.\u00a0 Note where it installs and copy the contents to somewhere safe.\u00a0 You can &quot;uninstall&quot; the hotfix now.  <\/li>\n<li>Upgrade all of your OpsMgr server components to service pack 1.  <\/li>\n<li>Install KB951116, KB952664, KB953290 onto the W2008 server that you want to install an agent on to.  <\/li>\n<li>Reboot the destination agent server.  <\/li>\n<li>Install the OpsMgr Agent.\u00a0 <strong><u><em>Make sure it is the SP1 agent!<\/em><\/u><\/strong> <\/li>\n<li>Stop the OpsMgr Health Service.  <\/li>\n<li>Browse to where you saved the contents of KB954049.\u00a0 Install the update.  <\/li>\n<li>Restart the server.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your agent should now be able to communicate with the management server assuming that all the security side of things is OK (the same rules apply).<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also find that you need to install the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?familyid=3529d233-5e3e-4b51-8f66-5d6f27005ec3\">Windows Server 2008 Discovery Management Pack<\/a> in order to be able to manage the OS on these new servers.\u00a0 This management pack also appears to be a pre-requisite for role\/feature management packs for Windows 2008, e.g. you&#8217;ll be unable to import those other management packs.\u00a0 This is probably quite logical, i.e. there is a discovery dependancy for Windows Server 2008 objects.<\/p>\n<p>Note that there&#8217;s a 4th fix (<a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/951327\/\">KB951327<\/a>) required for any machine running a OpsMgr console on Windows Server 2008.<\/p>\n<p>This is all a very manual thing.\u00a0 You can probably script this pretty easily.\u00a0 If you have System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (SCCM \/ ConfigMgr) or SMS then you can create a sequence of package programs with prerequisites to take care of this for you.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve an example of this in my SCCM 2007 beta <a href=\"http:\/\/cid-2095eac3772c41db.skydrive.live.com\/self.aspx\/Public\/Software|_Management|_Using|_CM|_2007.pdf\">whitepaper<\/a> on software management.<\/p>\n<p>EDIT:<\/p>\n<p>Remember that Windows Server 2008 has its firewall turned on by default and that it blocks both inbound and outbound traffic.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need to configure rules to allow your required traffic (e.g. TCP 5723) either manually, by script or by Group Policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went about doing this today and to be honest, the instructions are non-existent.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need a bunch of updates.\u00a0 Note that the hotfix rollup includes X64 and X86 updates and there are individual downloads for the x86 and x64 versions on the other KB&#8217;s.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how you can get an Operations Manager 2007 agent &hellip;
