{"id":9065,"date":"2008-06-09T09:57:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9065"},"modified":"2008-06-09T09:57:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"interviewing-first-impressions-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=9065","title":{"rendered":"Interviewing: First Impressions Last"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1 year ago I <a href=\"http:\/\/joeelway.spaces.live.com\/blog\/cns!2095EAC3772C41DB!564.entry\" target=\"_blank\">talked about how not to host an interview<\/a>.\u00a0 That was based on a couple of interviews that I&#8217;d attended as a candidate and the interviewing companies <em>really<\/em> screwed<em> <\/em>up and steered me elsewhere.\u00a0 You could say that they made a lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>In college, my IT course featured classes on all sorts of business subjects such as law, maths and marketing.\u00a0 Marketing was sometimes interesting.\u00a0 One of the most interesting things I learned was that (a) a happy customer might relay their positive experience to 2 or 3 people and that (b) an unhappy customer will relay their negative experience to around 13 people.\u00a0 That certainly has held true in relation to my experiences last year.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen <a href=\"http:\/\/joeelway.spaces.live.com\/blog\/cns!2095EAC3772C41DB!564.entry\" target=\"_blank\">Company A<\/a> sponsoring events I&#8217;ve been at, trying to recruit people.\u00a0 I suddenly feel the urge to retell my story from there.\u00a0 You can imagine the response of anyone when I tell them of the advert for an architect that was actually a break\/fix engineer and the rude &amp; unprofessional manner of one of the interviewers.<\/p>\n<p>A colleague who I&#8217;d rate as being very skilled recently told me he was interviewing for a job with Company A.\u00a0 I reminded him of my experience.\u00a0 He rightly said he&#8217;d try it out anyway.\u00a0 Following the interview, he emailed me with a story of his own.\u00a0 This skilled engineer was told over the phone that he wasn&#8217;t skilled enough.\u00a0 Hmm.\u00a0 It sounded like someone was let out of the basement to do interviews again \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Then this morning, the recruitment agency that sent me to Company A last year rang me up.\u00a0 Allegedly, Basement Boy has been &quot;sidelined&quot;.\u00a0 Yeah, right!\u00a0 Either that or he&#8217;s been cloned.\u00a0 My name came up in relation to a job there.\u00a0 I politely said &quot;no thanks&quot;.\u00a0 Anyway, I&#8217;ve got something good going right now so I don&#8217;t need the hassle of dealing with underground dwelling engineers who haven&#8217;t seen the light of day since the millennium.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve dealt with politics-playing morons in the past and I won&#8217;t voluntarily go waltzing into that playground again.\u00a0 I&#8217;d want to see a photocopy of his P45 before I&#8217;d even venture into the office &#8230; and you&#8217;d better bet my contributions to the employment contract would be &#8230; <em>creative<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, first impressions last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1 year ago I talked about how not to host an interview.\u00a0 That was based on a couple of interviews that I&#8217;d attended as a candidate and the interviewing companies really screwed up and steered me elsewhere.\u00a0 You could say that they made a lasting impression.
