{"id":8784,"date":"2007-02-06T09:12:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=8784"},"modified":"2007-02-06T09:12:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"microsoft-office-compatibility-pack-for-word-excel-and-powerpoint-2007-file-formats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=8784","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>There&#8217;s a really important <a href=\"http:\/\/bink.nu\/Article9459.bink\">article <\/a>on Bink that you should check out.\u00a0 Gartner (I rarely pay attention to these sort of companies) has recommended that all organisations should deploy the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&amp;displaylang=en\">Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>What&#8217;s the big deal?<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Anyone who&#8217;s been in the business for a while remembers the &quot;good old days&quot; when every version of Office had it&#8217;s own unique formats that were not backwards compatible, e.g. someone would mail and Office 97 document to a client who had Office 95 &#8230; the recipient wouldn&#8217;t be able to read it and would have to get the sender to save in the older format and resend.\u00a0 This fun and games probably caused millions of helpdesk calls.\u00a0 This all went away with the last few versions of Office, e.g. an Office\u00a02003 user could send a file to an Office XP user with no problems.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Things are changing.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Microsoft has changed the format of Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents in Office 2007 so that they are XML based.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Are they <em>trying<\/em> to cause us grief?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 This change in formats will likely be welcomed by busienss software developers.\u00a0 XML is a language that is portable between applications and is often used to transport data between those applications.\u00a0 This will make it easier for business applciation developers to integrate their solutions into the Office suite.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Sure, some developers and vendors will kick and scream about the new formats sayign they&#8217;ve not had a chance to keep up.\u00a0 But here&#8217;s my opinion\u00a0take &#8230; Tough!\u00a0 The product has been available for aroudn a year in public beta and release candidate versions, just like Vista was.\u00a0 If you cared about the\u00a0customers who bought your products then you&#8217;d keep up and take advantage of the new features.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Office 2007 does support the older versions.\u00a0 This means you can still save documents in these old .DOC, .XLS and .PPT formats for sharing with non 2007 users.\u00a0 But if they use this new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&amp;displaylang=en\">compatibility pack<\/a>, they&#8217;ll be able to open, edit and save\u00a0the new formats that you can use.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><em>Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/bink.nu\/Article9459.bink\">Bink<\/a>.<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a really important article on Bink that you should check out.\u00a0 Gartner (I rarely pay attention to these sort of companies) has recommended that all organisations should deploy the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. \u00a0 What&#8217;s the big deal?
