{"id":8755,"date":"2007-01-25T11:40:00","date_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=8755"},"modified":"2007-01-25T11:40:00","modified_gmt":"1999-11-29T20:00:00","slug":"windows-ntbackup-for-vistalonghorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=8755","title":{"rendered":"Windows NTBackup For Vista\/Longhorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A while back, I posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highwaycsl.com\/IT\/Whitepapers\/Vista VHD Backup.pdf\">document <\/a>that went through backups on Vista using the native backup functionality.\u00a0 While reading it, you&#8217;ll notice that backups have changed a lot.\u00a0 No longer are we using a BKF file that simulates a tape but we&#8217;re using a VHD file (virtual disk) that we can mount either in the operating system (using <a href=\"http:\/\/joeelway.spaces.live.com\/blog\/cns!2095EAC3772C41DB!326.entry\">VHDMount<\/a>) or in a virtual machine.\u00a0 We can assume that &quot;Longhorn&quot; will use a similar tool, if not the same one.\u00a0 But what do you do\u00a0if you need to restore from an old\u00a0Windows NTBackup back up?<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Yesterday, Microsoft <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?FamilyID=7da725e2-8b69-4c65-afa3-2a53107d54a7&amp;DisplayLang=en\">released <\/a>a &quot;Windows NT Backup &#8211; Restore&quot; utility.\u00a0 If you enable the Removable Storage Manager feature then you can use this tool to recover files from your old backups.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>If you are using Vista:<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Turn Windows Features on or off.
