Other consideration is operational consistency.<\/p>\n<h2>Designs<\/h2>\n<p>A bunch of designs are shown, including S2D and Storage Spaces clusters. Two Azure options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Premium File Shares (GA) as shared storage<\/li>\n<li>Shared Azure Disks (roadmap) as shared cluster disks \u2013 witness &amp; CSV <a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/SharedDiskSignUp\">https:\/\/aka.ms\/SharedDiskSignUp<\/a> Will support Premium SSD and Ultra SSD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Lessons From The Trenches<\/h2>\n<p>Download the slide(s) \u2013 lots of details.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You are the operator of Azure VMs and must to updates, backups, etc, and test.<\/li>\n<li>You must practice failure scenarios and have processes to deal with it.<\/li>\n<li>DO not use the VM temporary disk<\/li>\n<li>Do not attempt to convert from Standard to Premium disks during DR site failover \u2013 the conversion is not instant.<\/li>\n<li>Large VMs do not compensate for application architecture \u2013sometimes refactoring cannot be avoided<\/li>\n<li>Do not had-code specific VM gallery image names into scripts. Images are retired after two years \u2013 use the latest version because it is recently patched.<\/li>\n<li>Use DskSpd and FIO to measure performance as early as possible. Run multiple tests \u2013 because Azure Cache will kick in to improve performance. Note that some regions (East US) will perform faster than others.<\/li>\n<li>Use WS2019 to capture Azure host maintenance events in the faulover clustering event logs \u2013 1139, 1140, 1136<\/li>\n<li>S2D on Azure IaaS VM guest clusters can only use 2-way and 3-way mirror reliiency types. S2D caching tiers cannot be used.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t let S2D volumes become 100% full.
