{"id":15936,"date":"2014-01-22T15:18:55","date_gmt":"2014-01-22T15:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15936"},"modified":"2014-01-22T15:18:55","modified_gmt":"2014-01-22T15:18:55","slug":"how-microsoft-windows-build-team-replaced-sans-with-jbod-windows-server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15936","title":{"rendered":"How Microsoft Windows Build Team Replaced SANs with JBOD + Windows Server 2012 R2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve heard several times in various presentations about a whitepaper by Microsoft that discusses how the Windows build team in Microsoft HQ replaced traditional SAN storage (from a certain big name storage company) with Scale-Out File Server architecture based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows Server 2012 R2<\/li>\n<li>JBOD<\/li>\n<li>Storage Spaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I searched for this whitepaper time and time again and never found it. Then today I was searching for a different storage paper (which I have yet to find) but I did stumble on the <a href=\"http:\/\/download.microsoft.com\/download\/9\/4\/A\/94A15682-02D6-47AD-B209-79D6E2758A24\/Windows_Server_2012_R2_Storage_White_Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">whitepaper<\/a> with the build team details.<\/p>\n<p>The paper reveals that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Windows Build Team were using traditional SAN storage<\/li>\n<li>They needs 2 petabytes of storage to do 40,000 Windows installations per day<\/li>\n<li>2 PB was enough space for just 5 days of data !!!!<\/li>\n<li>A disk failure could affect dozens of teams in Microsoft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They switched to WS2012 R2 with SOFS architectures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20 x WS2012 R2 clustered file servers provide the SOFS HA architecture with easy manageability.<\/li>\n<li>20 x \u00a0JBODs (60 x 3.5&#8243; disk slots) were selected.\u00a0Do the maths; that\u2019s 20 x 60 x 4 TB = 4800 TB or &gt; 4.6\u00a0 petabytes!!! <em>Yes, the graphic says they are 3 TB drives but the text in the paper says the disks are 4 TB.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>There is an aggregate of 80 Gbps of networking to the servers. This is accomplished with 10 Gbps networking \u2013 I would guess it is iWARP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The result of the switch was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doubling of the storage throughput via SMB 3.0 networking<\/li>\n<li>Tripling of the raw storage capacity<\/li>\n<li><em>Lower<\/em> overall cost \u2013 reduced the cost\/TB by 33%<\/li>\n<li>In conjunction with Windows Server dedupe, they achieved 5x increase in capacity wutg 45-75% de-duplication rate.<\/li>\n<li>This lead to data retention going from 5 days to nearly a month.<\/li>\n<li>8 full racks of gear were culled. They reduced the server count by 6x.<\/li>\n<li>Each week 720 petabytes of data flows across this network to\/from the storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/image_thumb2.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/download.microsoft.com\/download\/9\/4\/A\/94A15682-02D6-47AD-B209-79D6E2758A24\/Windows_Server_2012_R2_Storage_White_Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">whitepaper<\/a> to learn more about how Windows Server 2012 R2 storage made all this possible.
