{"id":15700,"date":"2013-11-07T13:17:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T13:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15700"},"modified":"2013-11-07T13:17:00","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T13:17:00","slug":"heres-why-i-cancelled-my-xbox-one-pre-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15700","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s Why I Cancelled My Xbox One Pre-Order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sadly, I cancelled my Xbox One pre-order this morning.\u00a0 I\u2019d been thinking about this for a few weeks but 2 things pushed me over the edge over the last 24 hours.\u00a0 Let me summarize all of the reasons:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Games<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t play a wide variety of games.\u00a0 Madden lost me a few versions ago as the controls became over-fiddly.\u00a0 Most of my gaming time has gone into Rockstar titles, including GTA IV and add-ons, Red Dead Redemption, and GTA V.\u00a0 I detest random maze first person shooters, from Castle Wolfenstein onwards.\u00a0 None of the titles for Xbox One grabs my interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Performance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I, like many, own a HD TV.\u00a0 It cost me good money so I like to use feeds that offer 1080p.\u00a0 It was a real kicker that games companies are announcing that their Xbox One versions will be crippled to 720p because they hardware just can\u2019t keep up.\u00a0 This morning, I read that Dead Rising 3 will not only be limited to 720p, but will also only run at 30 frames per second instead of the normally expected 60 FPS.\u00a0\u00a0 This is where the moron will comment that Dead Rising 3 is the sort of game that I just said I don\u2019t play \u2013 true, but it is indicative that this hardware is insufficient for what it is being asked to do.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the PS4 is trouncing the Xbox One as a games console.\u00a0 That\u2019s the purpose of the machine \u2013 I couldn\u2019t give a flying fiddlers about Skype\/streaming on Xbox because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I rather do social media on a tablet\/phone where I have comfort<\/li>\n<li>Hardly any services exist outside of the USA<\/li>\n<li>My Roku is waaaaay more reliable and simpler for media playback than anything Microsoft has offered so far<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Price<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Xbox is inferior hardware to the PS4 \u2013 I\u2019m not going to debate that because the results are already in.\u00a0 The PS4 is $100\/\u20ac100 cheaper.\u00a0 Hmm.<\/p>\n<p>Xbox sales started off slow due to stupid restriction policies that were later cancelled.\u00a0 Then sales went up.\u00a0 Now I am hearing anecdotal evidence that pre-order cancellations are rocketing.\u00a0 It seems logical that if you do want to stick with the Xbox platform through the next generation, then you should wait until February when Microsoft will probably be forced to look at unbundling the Kinect and\/or reducing the price.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, I\u2019m not willing to spend \u20ac500 for inferior hardware.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Future of Xbox<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You would think that Microsoft makes a fortune on Xbox.\u00a0 The brand is very successful.\u00a0 Gamers and non-gamers of different generations recognise the brand.
