{"id":15439,"date":"2013-09-09T13:21:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T12:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15439"},"modified":"2013-09-09T13:21:00","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T12:21:00","slug":"the-effects-of-ws2012-r2-storage-spaces-write-back-cache-on-a-hyper-v-vm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15439","title":{"rendered":"The Effects Of WS2012 R2 Storage Spaces Write-Back Cache On A Hyper-V VM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I previously <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15430\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> about a new feature in Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Spaces called Write-Back Cache (WBC) and how it improved write performance from a Hyper-V host.\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t show you was how WBC improved performance from where it counts; how does WBC improve the write-performance of services running inside of a virtual machine?<\/p>\n<p>So, I set up a virtual machine.\u00a0 It has 3 virtual hard disks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disk.vhdx: The guest OS (WS2012 R2 Preview), and this is stored on SOFS2.\u00a0 This is a virtual Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) and is isolated from my tests.\u00a0 This is the C: drive in the VM.<\/li>\n<li>Disk1.vhdx: This is on SCSI 0 0 and is placed on \\SOFS1CSV1.\u00a0 The share is stored on a tiered storage space (50 GB SSD + 150 GB HDD) with 1 column and a write cache of 5 GB.\u00a0 This is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff8040;\">D drive<\/span><\/span> in the VM.<\/li>\n<li>Disk2.vhdx: This is on SCSI 0 1 and is placed on \\SOFS1CSV2.\u00a0 The share is stored on a non-tiered storage space (200 GB HDD) with 4 columns.\u00a0 There is no write cache.\u00a0 This is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">E: drive<\/span><\/span> in the VM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I set up SQLIO in the VM, with a test file in each D: (Disk1.vhdx \u2013 WBC on the underlying volume) and E: (Disk2.vhdx \u2013 no WBC on the underlying volume).\u00a0 Once again, I ran SQLIO against each test file, one at a time, with random 64 KB writes for 30 seconds \u2013 I copied\/pasted the scripts from the previous test.\u00a0 The results were impressive:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/image7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/image_thumb7.png\" width=\"604\" height=\"436\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, these are better numbers than from the host itself!\u00a0 The extra layer of virtualization is adding performance in my lab!<\/p>\n<p>Once again, Write-Back Cache has rocked, making the write performance 6.27 times faster.\u00a0 A few points on this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The VM\u2019s performance with the VHDX on the WBC-enabled volume was slightly better than the host\u2019s raw performance with the same physical disk.<\/li>\n<li>The VM\u2019s performance with the VHDX on the WBC-disabled volume was nearly twice as good as the host\u2019s raw performance with the same physical disk.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we see a WBC improvement of 6-times instead of 11-times.
