{"id":15304,"date":"2013-08-23T13:09:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T12:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15304"},"modified":"2013-08-23T13:09:00","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T12:09:00","slug":"odxnot-all-sans-are-created-equally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15304","title":{"rendered":"ODX\u2013Not All SANs Are Created Equally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently got to play with a very expensive fiber channel SAN for the first time in a while (I normally only see iSCSI or SAS in the real world).&#160; This was a chance to play with WS2012 Hyper-V on this SAN, and this SAN supported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyper-v.nu\/archives\/hvredevoort\/2012\/04\/windows-8-storage-hyper-v-part-4-offload-data-transfer-odx\/\" target=\"_blank\">Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Put simply, ODX is a SAN feature that allows Windows to offload certain file operations to the SAN, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Server to server file transfer\/copy<\/li>\n<li>Creating a VHD file<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That latter was of interest to me, because this should accelerate the creation of a fixed VHD\/X file, making (self-service) clouds more responsive.<\/p>\n<p>The hosts were fully patched, both hotfixes and update rollups.&#160; Yes, that includes the ODX hotfix that is bundled into the <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14541\" target=\"_blank\">May clustering bundle<\/a>.&#160; We created a 60 GB fixed size VHDX file \u2026 and it took as long as it would without ODX.&#160; I was afraid of this.&#160; The manufacturer of this particular SAN has \u2026 a certain reputation for being stuck in the time dilation of an IT black hole since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on making use of ODX then you need to understand that this isn\u2019t like making a jump from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps where there\u2019s a predictable 10x improvement.&#160; Far from it; the performance of ODX on one vendors top end SAN can be very different to that of another manufacturer.&#160; Two of my fellow Hyper-V MVPs have done a good bit of work looking into this stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Hans Vredevoort (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hvredevoort&lrm;\" target=\"_blank\">@hvredevoort<\/a>) tested the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyper-v.nu\/archives\/hvredevoort\/2013\/07\/notes-from-the-field-using-odx-with-hp-3par-storage-arrays\/\" target=\"_blank\">HP 3PAR P10000 V400<\/a> with HP 3PAR OS v3.1.2.&#160; With ODX enabled (it is by default on the SAN and WS2012) when creating a pretty regular 50 GB VHDX Hans saw the time go from an unenhanced 6.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes.&#160; On the other hand, a 1 TB VHDX would take 33 minutes with ODX enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Didier Van Hoye (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorkingHardInIT&lrm;\" target=\"_blank\">@workinghardinit<\/a>) decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/workinghardinit.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/24\/some-odx-fun-with-windows-server-2012-r2-and-a-dell-compellent-san\/\" target=\"_blank\">experiment with his Dell Compellent<\/a>.&#160; Didier created 10 * 50 GB VHDX files <em>and <\/em>10 * 475 GB fixed VHDX files in <strong><u>42 seconds<\/u><\/strong>.&#160; That was 5.12 TB of files created nearly 2 minutes faster than the 3PAR could create a single 50 GB VHDX file.&#160; Didier has understandably gone on a video recording craze showing off how this stuff works.&#160; <a href=\"http:\/\/workinghardinit.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/23\/windows-server-2012-r2-unmap-odx-on-a-dell-compellent-san-demo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here is his latest<\/a>.&#160; Clearly, the Compellent rocks where others waltz.<\/p>\n<p>These comparisons reaffirm what you should probably know: don\u2019t trust the whitepapers, brochures, or sales-speak from a manufacturer.&#160; Evidently not all features are created equally.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:e3d2c137-8ecc-42bb-9bf5-a0efb5009b86\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2012\" rel=\"tag\">Windows Server 2012<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2012+R2\" rel=\"tag\">Windows Server 2012 R2<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Storage\" rel=\"tag\">Storage<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently got to play with a very expensive fiber channel SAN for the first time in a while (I normally only see iSCSI or SAS in the real world).&#160; This was a chance to play with WS2012 Hyper-V on this SAN, and this SAN supported Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX).
