{"id":15097,"date":"2013-06-26T18:57:38","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T17:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15097"},"modified":"2013-06-26T18:57:38","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T17:57:38","slug":"doing-an-online-update-from-windows-8-pro-to-windows-8-1-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=15097","title":{"rendered":"Doing An Online Update From Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>PLEASE NOTE: <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-8\/not-supported-tablets-pcs\" target=\"_blank\">Not all machines<\/a> are supported by Windows 8.1 Preview at this time.&#160; Via <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/thurrott\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Thurrott<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I started an update of the office demo Surface Pro to Windows 8.1 Preview using the online update process.&#160; I started by browsing to <a href=\"http:\/\/preview.microsoft.com\">http:\/\/preview.microsoft.com<\/a>, and clicking Get It Now.<\/p>\n<p>Note: you can also download the ISOs (x86 and x64) from the site (tomorrow) and from MSDN and TechNet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/image35.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/image_thumb35.png\" width=\"454\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This downloads and runs an update installer.&#160; This is a small update to Windows.&#160; In the case of the Surface Pro, it spent ages at \u201cConfiguring Windows features 100% \u2026\u201d after the reboot.<\/p>\n<p>I then logged into Windows 8 again.&#160; A banner appeared, offering me the Windows 8.1 Preview.&#160; I clicked on Go To The Store in the banner.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 8.1 Pro Preview was there for me to install.&#160; Nice.&#160; I clicked Download to get the 2.44GB installer.&#160; I forgot to change the power plan of the Surface Pro and it went to sleep.&#160; I went back in, changed the plan, and the download picked right up after a few moments.<\/p>\n<p>After about 1 hour 20 minutes, the progress was at around 40% on my 8 Mbps ADSL (considered fast in Ireland <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-sadsmile\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Sad smile\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-sadsmile.png\" \/>).<\/p>\n<p>10 minutes later it jumped to around 66%.&#160; This acceleration might have been due to the Build keynote stream that was aborted by Microsoft that I had been watching.<\/p>\n<p>And then after 1 hour and 40 minutes I was prompted to reboot the Surface Pro.&#160; Oooh exciting!&#160; It then rebooted into a Setting Up &lt;XX&gt;% screen.&#160; Less than 3 minutes later that was done and a another reboot.<\/p>\n<p>Now the Surface was Getting Devices Ready.&#160; That was quick, just 30 or so seconds.&#160; Then Getting Ready appeared, and then Applying PC Settings.&#160; That flew up to 100%.&#160; And another reboot.<\/p>\n<p>It then was Setting Up A Few More Things with another % count.&#160; We were done within a minute.&#160; Then it was Getting Ready.&#160; Ooof!&#160; Are we there yet?&#160; Are we there yet?&#160; Are we there yet? <\/p>\n<p>Wait \u2026. License terms <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-confusedsmile\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Confused smile\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-confusedsmile1.png\" \/>&#160; I wonder what happens if you don\u2019t accept the license terms!&#160; Now it wants my password and dual factor phone number.&#160; A security code is instantly texted to me and I verify the machine.<\/p>\n<p>Next up: Skydrive.&#160; I choose to use Skydrive.&#160; There\u2019s nothing more than that apparently.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s the \u201cHi, we\u2019re setting up things for you\u201d.&#160; Damn you!&#160; You\u2019ve already set up lots of things for me <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile\" style=\"border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none\" alt=\"Open-mouthed smile\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/wlEmoticon-openmouthedsmile1.png\" \/>&#160; It\u2019s been 10 minutes since the machine \u201cfinished\u201d installing.&#160; A minute later and the Start Screen appears with my previously installed apps.&#160; And we\u2019re done!<\/p>\n<p>Edit1:<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not done.&#160; There\u2019s up to 71 MB of updates to install.&#160; Now we\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:f0d1a10e-dd8a-41f0-a561-a3a3b17c9f38\" class=\"wlWriterSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+8.1\" rel=\"tag\">Windows 8.1<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Deployment\" rel=\"tag\">Deployment<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLEASE NOTE: Not all machines are supported by Windows 8.1 Preview at this time.&#160; Via Paul Thurrott.
