Understanding Hyper-V Management<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Take a wander over to MSDN<\/a> to re-familiarise yourself with Hyper-V\u2019s architecture.\u00a0 It\u2019s always good to revisit and refresh yourself with how Hyper-V works because this information can make troubleshooting much easier.<\/p>\n See what the page calls the root partition?\u00a0 That\u2019s actually the parent partition, where you\u2019ve installed the host\u2019s OS, which then became the management OS when:<\/p>\n Let\u2019s focus on 3 pieces that run in User Mode in the management OS:<\/p>\n Event Logs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Each module produces its own information and logs it in the Windows event logs.\u00a0 Open up event viewer and browse to Applications And Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows and you can see a series of folders for Hyper-V components:<\/p>\n Ben Armstrong (@VirtualPCGuy<\/a>) blogged<\/a> about these back in 2009.\u00a0 You\u2019ll notice some changes in WS2012 since then, such as the addition of a log for virtual Fibre Channel events (Hyper-V-SynthFC).<\/p>\n As Ben notes, Hyper-V-VMMS is the place to start looking when there\u2019s a problem with Hyper-V.\u00a0 It gives us the WMI interface into Hyper-V.\u00a0 And Hyper-V-Worker is a good place to look if you\u2019re troubleshooting anything to do with the responsibilities of a Worker Process.<\/p>\n Understanding The Error<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n What you see in the error box is an accumulation of information from several sources.\u00a0 In fact, you\u2019ll find some of this text in the event logs.\u00a0 To demonstrate this, I have:<\/p>\n Below, I have expanded the resulting error to see much more information:<\/p>\n Let\u2019s start with the text blocks that are highlighted in red, working our way from the bottom one to the top.\u00a0 These are errors related to the VMWP-managed state transition of the VM.\u00a0 As a result, these text blocks are errors that are logged by the Worker Process in Hyper-V-Worker.<\/p>\n The bottom error, which was the first to be logged by the VMWP, is here:<\/p>\n Note that the text is identical.\u00a0 This continues with the subsequent VMWP text blocks & error log entries:<\/p>\n And again:<\/p>\n Now onto the text block that I\u2019ve highlighted in green.\u00a0 That you can find in the Hyper-V-VMMS log:<\/p>\n Read from top to bottom, the story is:<\/p>\n The Lessons To Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n There are 3 things to pick up from this post:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ever been confronted by a Hyper-V error box like this?
