{"id":14435,"date":"2013-04-05T08:50:50","date_gmt":"2013-04-05T07:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14435"},"modified":"2013-04-05T08:50:50","modified_gmt":"2013-04-05T07:50:50","slug":"windows-server-2012-hyper-v-live-migration-does-not-support-passthrough-disks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14435","title":{"rendered":"Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Live Migration Does Not Support Passthrough Disks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The KB article that I reported on was incorrect.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve since <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14478\" target=\"_blank\">posted <\/a>a correction that shows you what the KB article should have said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><del>I\u2019ve seen lots of posts online where people complain the Live Migration fails on WS2012 Hyper-V when a VM has a pass-through disk.\u00a0 It\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2834898\/\" target=\"_blank\">official<\/a>, Live Migration in WS2012 Hyper-V does not support pass-through disks (what VMware calls Raw Device Mapping).<\/del><\/div>\n<div><del><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Changes and improvements in Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 no longer support pass-through disks if Live Migration is to be used.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>I, for one, applaud this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been quite vocal about disliking passthrough disks.\u00a0 If you need the flexibility and the fastest storage performance then use fixed virtual hard disks.\u00a0 A fixed virtual hard disk is almost the same speed as the underlying LUN and you\u2019re probably getting lots of IOPS by stacking disks in a LUN or disk group.\u00a0 Half the Internet (if not more) runs like this, so stop thinking that <em>your<\/em> mission critical app for 100 users needs to be special \u2013 especially if you\u2019re guessing \u2026 and I <em>know<\/em> you haven\u2019t done an assessment.\u00a0 You know who you are.<\/div>\n<p><\/del><\/div>\n<div><del>The default format of virtual hard disk in WS2012 is VHDX.\u00a0 If you need volumes bigger than 2040 GB (just under 2 TB) then VHDX scales out to 64 TB.\u00a0 Seriously, just use VHDX and stop applying inappropriate and limited VMware practices to Hyper-V.<\/del><\/div>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:1ca5a34d-8b98-4c72-8b3a-02765726aeca\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding: 0px;\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2012\">Windows Server 2012<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\">Virtualisation<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Storage\">Storage<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The KB article that I reported on was incorrect.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve since posted a correction that shows you what the KB article should have said.
