{"id":14299,"date":"2013-03-12T16:49:35","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T16:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14299"},"modified":"2013-03-12T16:49:35","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T16:49:35","slug":"why-are-you-still-deploying-windows-server-2003","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14299","title":{"rendered":"Why Are You Still Deploying Windows Server 2003?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s idiotic!\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong: I loved Windows Server 2003.\u00a0 So much so, that soon after the GA I started a new job to deploy a new server network globally across a bank and I convinced management to go with W2003 instead of W2K Server.<\/p>\n<p>I know that a very large percentage of Windows servers are still on W2003.\u00a0 But why would you deploy more of them now?\u00a0 Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 offer <em>so<\/em> much more than the 10 year old W2003.\u00a0 The ease of management, the user friendly and business focused <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/hh801901.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">features of Windows Server 2012<\/a> just scream out to be used.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention that support for Windows Server 2003 is quickly circling the drain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is out of mainstream support and into extended support (July 2013, 2010): when is the last time you saw Microsoft release software that supports the 10 year old server OS?\u00a0 Exactly!<\/li>\n<li>End of all support (that means product support and security fixes) comes on July 14th, 2015 \u2026 just over 2 years time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only a short-sighted person plans on deploying new services on Windows Server 2003 at this point.\u00a0 <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Now<\/span><\/em><\/strong> is the time to start planning your upgrades to the new OS.\u00a0 That\u2019s because you have server apps to migrate\/upgrade\/replace \u2013 and that\u2019s a big deal.\u00a0 You may even have hardware to replace and virtualisation projects to size, purchase for, and plan \u2013 WS2012 makes this easier with built-in Hyper-V virtualisation, SMB 3.0 storage that is a nice alternative to the pricey SAN, and better-value-than-ever licensing.<\/p>\n<p>So get started.\u00a0 Run <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/solutionaccelerators\/dd537566.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">MAP<\/a> to assess your environment.\u00a0 Upgrade that AD from 2003 to 2012.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually a <a href=\"http:\/\/msmvps.com\/blogs\/mweber\/archive\/2012\/07\/30\/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">pretty simple process<\/a>.\u00a0 You\u2019ll start to see <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/library\/hh831477.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">the benefits<\/a> very quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Lecture over <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/wlEmoticon-smile5.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:2d694633-56ba-420e-a210-327d67cf13d4\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding: 0px;\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2003\">Windows Server 2003<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2012\">Windows Server 2012<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s idiotic!\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong: I loved Windows Server 2003.\u00a0 So much so, that soon after the GA I started a new job to deploy a new server network globally across a bank and I convinced management to go with W2003 instead of W2K Server.
