{"id":14173,"date":"2013-02-10T01:36:33","date_gmt":"2013-02-10T01:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14173"},"modified":"2013-02-10T01:36:33","modified_gmt":"2013-02-10T01:36:33","slug":"the-windows-8-and-samsung-ativ-smartpc-battery-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14173","title":{"rendered":"The Windows 8 and Samsung ATIV SmartPC Battery Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>I wrote most of this blog post while flying.&#160; The ending was written in Florida.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When I bought a Windows 8 tablet, one of the things I had in my mind was trans-Atlantic travel.&#160; My iPad 1 barely would make it from Dublin (Ireland) to the east coast of the USA.&#160; Then I\u2019d have to find somewhere to charge to make it to the west coast.&#160; Inevitably, I\u2019d end up having to watch the awful Disney movie on the flickering tube TV with a colour channel missing on the US Airways or Delta flight.<\/p>\n<p>No more.&#160; Windows 8 devices offered great battery life.&#160; My SmarPC survived for over 12 hours one day while I surfed and worked.&#160; Could it do as well playing movies?&#160; Movies hammer the battery more because there isn\u2019t as little time for rest.<\/p>\n<p>Today I am flying from Dublin to Orlando, via London.&#160; I charged the device overnight, topped it up in Dublin Airport, and have been surviving on batter since.&#160; I\u2019m expect a total journey time of just under 17 hours.&#160; Obviously the device has to be off for some of that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boarding and take-off in Dublin <\/li>\n<li>Landing and transfer in London <\/li>\n<li>Boarding and take-off in London <\/li>\n<li>Lunch during the London-Orlando flight <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Will the tablet make it to landing in Orlando?&#160; Ideally, I\u2019d like to have some juice left there \u2026 just in case I need to get online to google or book something.<\/p>\n<p>My usage so far:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surfing, tweeting and email for about 20 minutes in Dublin <\/li>\n<li>2 episodes of a 22 minute comedy while traveling to London <\/li>\n<li>Another 22 minute comedy in London <\/li>\n<li>Numerous 42 minute shows in flight, followed by some reading, some emails, and blogging. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are over Quebec right now, with about 4 hours 12 minutes to go.&#160; My battery has 33% left.&#160; It is around 12 hours since I topped up the charge in the tablet.<\/p>\n<p><em>In Florida:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m in Florida now.&#160; The batter got down to around 4% while we were still 2 hours out of Orlando.&#160; While I might have gotten 12-13 hours out of the device with general usage, it is quite clear that watching videos does hammer the battery.&#160; I dimmed the screen for the last hour or so but I don\u2019t know if this made much or any difference.<\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind that there were airplane\/security mandated shutdown\/reboots and they probably sucked more battery than a simple sleep\/wakeup.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:3d20aed8-f481-43bb-ac43-cd32f4360ce2\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hardware\" rel=\"tag\">Hardware<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+8\" rel=\"tag\">Windows 8<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote most of this blog post while flying.&#160; The ending was written in Florida.
