{"id":14013,"date":"2013-01-09T09:33:18","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T09:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14013"},"modified":"2013-01-09T09:33:18","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T09:33:18","slug":"red-hat-enterprice-linux-5-9-has-built-in-support-for-hyper-v","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=14013","title":{"rendered":"Red Hat Enterprice Linux 5.9 Has Built-In Support For Hyper-V"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, Red Hat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/about\/news\/press-archive\/2013\/1\/red-hat-announces-general-availability-of-red-hat-enterprise-linux-5-9\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> general availability of RHEL 5.9.&#160; I\u2019m no penguin-hugger, but RHEL seems to me to be the favoured Linux in the enterprise (with cousin CentOS being the leader in the public cloud, at least in my experience).&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Me, a Microsoft-phile, blogging about Linux releases?&#160; Yeah, I know, but this is a big one.&#160; That\u2019s because <a href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/knowledge\/solutions\/261453\" target=\"_blank\">RHEL 5.9 has built-in support for Hyper-V<\/a>.&#160; According to Red Hat:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The following para-virtualized use cases have been tested by both Red Hat and Microsoft for joint support:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All fresh installations of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 <\/li>\n<li>Upgrades from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8 guests with Microsoft provided LIS version 3.4 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 guests with built-in para-virtualized drivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following use cases are <em>not<\/em> supported by both Red Hat and Microsoft:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upgrades from fully virtualized (no LIS drivers) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8 guests to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 guests with built-in para-virtualized drivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Microsoft does occasionally release updates to the Linux Integration Services for Hyper-V (aka Hyper-V integration components for Linux).&#160; And in my experience, Linux admins don\u2019t upgrade their Linux installations to newer versions too often.&#160; So there is a note from Red Hat:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Customers can continue to install and utilize the LIS drivers provided and supported by Microsoft.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That means you can upgrade the built-in Linux Integration Services to a newer version with more functionality.&#160; Based on what we saw recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13967\" target=\"_blank\">Dynamic Memory<\/a> support appears to be coming to Linux in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Red Hat does call out Hyper-V in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/about\/news\/press-archive\/2013\/1\/red-hat-announces-general-availability-of-red-hat-enterprise-linux-5-9\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>New Virtualization Capabilities and Flexibility in Multi-vendor Environments<\/strong>. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 enhances the operating system&#8217;s usability in multi-vendor environments by introducing Microsoft Hyper-V drivers for improved performance.
