{"id":13580,"date":"2012-09-28T16:24:32","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T15:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13580"},"modified":"2012-09-28T16:24:32","modified_gmt":"2012-09-28T15:24:32","slug":"install-hyper-v-server-2012-on-usb-flash-drives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13580","title":{"rendered":"Install Hyper-V Server 2012 On USB Flash Drives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A common question I\u2019ve seen is \u201cCan I install Hyper-V on USB?\u201d.&#160; The answer is \u2026 sort of.<\/p>\n<p>In the article, <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/hh833682.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s New in Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012<\/a>, it says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hyper-V Server 2012 supports all of the new features in the Hyper-V server role of Windows Server 2012 and a number of other general Windows Server 2012 features. It continues to support features from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 such as failover clustering, multipath I\/O, server backup, and the ability to install this product on <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ee731893(WS.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\">bootable USB flash drives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Please pay <em>careful<\/em> attention: It refers to the free product Hyper-V Server 2012.&#160; <em>No where<\/em>, I repeat \u2026 <strong><u><em>NO WHERE<\/em><\/u><\/strong> does it say that Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V is supported on USB.&#160; It\u2019ll be entirely your fault if you assume that you have support to install Windows Server 2012 on USB and enable Hyper-V.&#160; The TechNet text only mentions Hyper-V Server 2012 and that is a different product.<\/p>\n<p>Remember my mantra on this: if you assume, then assume that you are wrong.<\/p>\n<p>If you follow the link to the USB instructions (which are dated for Hyper-V Server 2008 R2) you will see another important sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The scenario described in this document is only supported for original equipment manufacturers (OEM).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, it is OK for Dell, HP, etc, to install Hyper-V Server 2012 on a USB stick and ship it to you.&#160; It is not supported if you do this for yourself.&#160; The instructions are <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ee731893(WS.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\">there<\/a>; you can use them to build yourself a <strong><u><em>lab<\/em><\/u><\/strong> that runs from USB.&#160; And that\u2019s that.&#160; Do not go building this for yourself for production support.&#160; You have been warned.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone asks, no, I have not seen a server company offer this.&#160; In fact, I talked to some very senior server people in one of those companies a few months ago and they had never even heard of this boot option.&#160; They even thought it was an ESXi only solution.<\/p>\n<p>Also, boot from SD is not listed as an option.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:dfc04c84-5524-4dae-8079-67e2c476e53c\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V+Server\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V Server<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\" rel=\"tag\">Virtualisation<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A common question I\u2019ve seen is \u201cCan I install Hyper-V on USB?\u201d.&#160; The answer is \u2026 sort of.
