{"id":13504,"date":"2012-09-06T18:26:22","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T17:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13504"},"modified":"2012-09-06T18:26:22","modified_gmt":"2012-09-06T17:26:22","slug":"this-announcement-comes-to-you-from-the-department-of-virtualisation-disinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13504","title":{"rendered":"This Announcement Comes To You From The Department of Virtualisation Disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit, I have a big ol\u2019 belly laugh on Wednesday as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I hit a whole new high in blog hits for the second day running after my <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13483\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V vs vSphere 5.1 feature compare post<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The childish reactions from vFanboys and VMware employees (including public facing VMware evangelists)<\/li>\n<li>Eric Gray declaring that more IOPS for VMs is ba-ad, mmmkay!?!?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When the pro-vSphere arguments are the equivalent of \u201cYou suck!\u201d then you know you can stick a fork in \u2018em cos they are done.<\/p>\n<p>I especially loved the comments that I should read someone else\u2019s post on the same subject because it was \u201cfair and balanced\u201d.\u00a0 I LMAO at that one because anyone who declares Hyper-V only fit for SME environments, despite the fact that it is more feature rich and more scalable, has well and truly drunk the beyond-the-sell-by-date Kool-Aid:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image_thumb12.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"304\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s deal with some other objections that came my way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Balancing storage consumption for VMs: System Center PRO management packs more than deal with that.\u00a0 In fact, one vendor\u2019s MP gives us a hardware level view so that we can proactively balance work.\u00a0 Next!<\/li>\n<li>A rich eco system for DR: Hyper-V Replica is hardware agnostic.\u00a0 Clustered host, non clustered, SMB 3.0, DAS, iSCSI, SAS, HP, NetApp, Dell, EMC \u2026 it does not care.\u00a0 If anything, it makes expensive partner solutions irrelevant, making DR more affordable for all.\u00a0\u00a0 Next!<\/li>\n<li>vMotion over long distance: What are you smokin\u2019 there, cowboy? That\u2019s just networking.\u00a0 You still thinking <em>Live Migration <\/em>is unique to VMware?\u00a0 Who says Crack doesn\u2019t mess up your head?<\/li>\n<li>Support for metrocluster:\u00a0 Like Nancy Reagan says: just say NO.\u00a0 People have been building multi-site, geo metro, whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-em clusters with Hyper-V for <em>years<\/em>, son.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the sort of crap that I\u2019m talking about when I mention VMware FUD.\u00a0 Either biased opinions or ignorance.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait for the \u201cYou can\u2019t run Linux on Hyper-V\u201d argument <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/wlEmoticon-smile3.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oh \u2013 and no one wanted to debate the actual feature comparison where Hyper-V is clearly in the lead, offering more, doing more, and doing it with full support for the flexibility of Live Migration.<\/p>\n<p>My counter arguments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many VMs can you run in your cluster?\u00a0 Only 3,000?\u00a0 So you want me to have more clusters, more units of administration, and spend more time doing work?\u00a0 Huh!<\/li>\n<li>What happens when you Live Migrate SR-IOV enabled VMs?\u00a0 Oh you can\u2019t!<\/li>\n<li>How many nodes in your public cloud solution?\u00a0 Only 32?<\/li>\n<li>Your VMDK is only how big and has what fundamental break out security flaw?\u00a0 Ssssh!\u00a0 Don\u2019t mention the war!<\/li>\n<li>ODX is only available in what version?<\/li>\n<li>Even the most basic of virtual switch security features require what?\u00a0 Oh more spending, right.<\/li>\n<li>How small is your partner eco system to replace the VMware <em>disposable<\/em> virtual switch?\u00a0 Does VMware not have enough faith in their own switch?\u00a0 What good is it if it must be replaced to make it enterprise ready?<\/li>\n<li>How much CPU do you waste by enabling IPsec in your VMs?\u00a0 I forgot, security isn\u2019t important in that solution.\u00a0 Who cares about the app anyway, eh?<\/li>\n<li>You can only do how many simultaneous vMotions on enterprise datacenter networking?\u00a0 That\u2019s not very good at all.\u00a0 Sure, if more was bad, then why would Enterprise Plus bother with just 8?\u00a0 Everyone loves waiting around for their 2 TB RAM ESXi hosts to pause so they can do some essential maintenance.\u00a0 The risk of the h\/w failure killing everything is a thrill ride like Russian Roulette.<\/li>\n<li>Software Defined Networking isn\u2019t built in?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t everyone just declare this essential after VMware spent over $1 billion to play catch up with WS2012 Hyper-V?\u00a0 Maybe cloud is just a fad, eh?<\/li>\n<li>The VMware Tools aren&#8217;t built into the Linux kernel?\u00a0 Strange that, cos &#8220;evil community hatin'&#8221; Microsoft had the Hyper-V Linux Integration Services rubber stamped and included by Linus himself.<\/li>\n<li>What is the VMware service deployment mechanism?\u00a0 Ahhh, VMware is all about servers.\u00a0 I get ya now.\u00a0 I prefer managing service and SLA.<\/li>\n<li>Wait \u2026 seriously \u2026. how much do you want me to spend on vSphere?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>VMware makes a good <em>hypervisor<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s just now, WS2012 Hyper-V is more suited to the enterprise, and Microsoft gets it \u2013 the cloud is all about service, and not servers.\u00a0 This era is about beyond virtualisation and the hypervisor.\u00a0 Microsoft designed the solution for that.\u00a0 Their experience in providing cloud services way before that term was coined really shows through, even more so now with their exposure to Azure.\u00a0 It was clear which way things were going when I had the option to choose between Hyper-V and VMware back in 2008 after deploying\/running a successful VMware deployment previously.\u00a0 I cared more about app performance and availability than chocolate kettle doo-dads like FT, or their vSphere power optimisation feature which was included but not supported in production at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Am I biased towards Hyper-V?\u00a0 Absolutely, because I believe it and System Center are the superior solution.\u00a0 Nuff said.<\/p>\n<p>Go ahead punk, make me laugh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:804cb623-b5cc-4290-b612-de367dae1b84\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"margin: 0px;
