{"id":12941,"date":"2012-06-21T09:38:53","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T08:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12941"},"modified":"2012-06-21T09:38:53","modified_gmt":"2012-06-21T08:38:53","slug":"altaro-blog-post-hyper-v-guest-design-fixed-vs-dynamic-vhd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12941","title":{"rendered":"Altaro Blog Post &#8211; Hyper-V Guest Design: Fixed vs. Dynamic VHD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I still encounter people who are confused by the disk options in Hyper-V.&#160; Altaro have updated their blog with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altaro.com\/blog\/hyper-v-guest-design-fixed-vs-dynamic-vhd\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>, discussing the merits of passthrough (raw) disk, fixed VHD, and dynamic VHD and it\u2019s worth a read.&#160; Being a storage company, it\u2019s worth paying attention to their observations.<\/p>\n<p>Further to their notes I\u2019d add:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows Server 2012 adds a new VHDX format that is 4K aligned and expands out to 64 TB (VHD max is 2040 GB and VMDK is 2 TB).<\/li>\n<li>Storage level backup cannot be done using passthrough disks so you have to revert to traditional backup processes.<\/li>\n<li>Passthrough disks lock your VM into a physical location and you lose flexibility.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced features like snapshots and Hyper-V Replica cannot be implemented with passthrough disks.<\/li>\n<li>In production I always favour Fixed VHD over Dynamic.&#160; However, I can understand if you choose Dynamic VHD for your OS VHDs (with no data <em>at all)<\/em> and place these onto a dedicated CSV (with no data VHDs on it) \u2013 assuming that data VHDs are fixed and placed on different CSVs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have a read of the Altaro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.altaro.com\/blog\/hyper-v-guest-design-fixed-vs-dynamic-vhd\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> and make up your own mind.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:c6dfcfdf-c995-4593-a9e3-6df6f615237b\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2008+R2\" rel=\"tag\">Windows Server 2008 R2<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Storage\" rel=\"tag\">Storage<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\" rel=\"tag\">Virtualisation<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I still encounter people who are confused by the disk options in Hyper-V.&#160; Altaro have updated their blog with a post, discussing the merits of passthrough (raw) disk, fixed VHD, and dynamic VHD and it\u2019s worth a read.&#160; Being a storage company, it\u2019s worth paying attention to their observations.
