SMB 3.0 over 1 Gbps network connection achieved 98% of DAS performance using SQL in transactional processing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb32.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If there are multiple 1 Gbps NICs then you can use SMB Multichannel which gives aggregated bandwidth and LBFO.&#160; And go extreme with SMB Direct (RDMA) to save CPU.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>VSS and SMB 3.0 File Shares<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You need a way to support remote VSS snapshots for SMB 3.0 file shares if supporting Hyper-V.&#160; We can do app consistent snapshots of VMs stored on a WS2012 file server.&#160; Backup just works as normal \u2013 backing up VMs on the host.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image37.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb33.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Backup talks to backup agent on host.&#160; <\/li>\n<li>Hyper-V VSS Writer reaches into all the VMs and ensures everything is consistent.&#160; <\/li>\n<li>VSS engine is then asked to do the snapshot.&#160; In this case, the request is relayed to the file server where the VSS snapshot is done.&#160; <\/li>\n<li>The path to the snapshot is returned to the Hyper-V host and that path is handed back to the backup server.&#160; <\/li>\n<li>The backup server can then choose to either grab the snapshot from the share or from the Hyper-V host.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Data Deduplication<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dedup is built into Windows Server 2012.&#160; It is turned on per-volume.&#160; You can exclude folders\/file types.&#160; By default files not modified in 5 days are deduped \u2013 SO IT DOES NOT APPLY TO RUNNING VMs.&#160; It identifies redundant data, compresses the chunks, and stores them.&#160; Files are deduped automatically and reconstituted on the fly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image38.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb34.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><font style=\"background-color: #ff0000\" color=\"#ffffff\"><strong>REPEAT: Deduplication is not intended for running virtual machines.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Unified Storage<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The iSCSI target is now built into WS2012 and can provide block storage for Hyper-V <em>before<\/em> WS2012. ?!?!?!&#160;
