There Is A Hyper-V Server 2012 Release Candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: Microsoft announced the new licensing for Windows Server 2012 since this post. \u00a0Check out the licensing scenarios <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=13090\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0And note that Hyper-V is free anyway if you are legally licensing your Windows Server VMs. \u00a0Hyper-V Server has a place, but usually not when running Windows Server VMs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was downloading some stuff from TechNet for the lab at home when I noticed this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb15.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"504\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, I nearly accidentally downloaded it \u2026 ick! <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile.png\" alt=\"Winking smile\" \/> I didn\u2019t read anything about this release at all.<\/p>\n<p>Hyper-V Server is the free to download hypervisor from Microsoft.\u00a0 Licensing-wise, it has a teeny tiny niche market.\u00a0 That\u2019s because you never license VMs for Windows Server, even with VMware or XenServer; you license hosts with Standard (usually SBS Premium), Enterprise (very small site), or Datacenter (makes sense financially with around 7 or more VMs per host).\u00a0 And if you license the host + VMs with one of those, then you might as well use it.\u00a0 I prefer the full install, even in WS2012, and others who like Core can flip back\/forth to the GUI in WS2012.<\/p>\n<p>Where Hyper-V Server does have a place is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>VDI: where you\u2019re not licensing the host for Windows Server VMs.\u00a0 It might be pointless buying Datacenter edition when those licensing benefits are going to waste and not cancelling out the cost of the host OS.\u00a0 the free Hyper-V Server has all the same functionality.<\/li>\n<li>Linux VMs: Same argument as with VDI.<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t have licensing for Windows Server, you want to build a host <em>once<\/em>, and play with downloaded time-bombed demo stuff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019re in that market for Hyper-V Server?\u00a0 If so, go grab the RC and start playing and learning.<\/p>\n<p>EDIT#1<\/p>\n<p>As soon as I post this, I see tweets that it\u2019s <em>just<\/em> been announced at TechEd <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/wlEmoticon-smile3.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/> It will continue to match the Datacenter edition for features by the looks of the tweets.<\/p>\n<p>EDIT#2<\/p>\n<p>Oh for the hell of it, let\u2019s have a look at the ESXi free edition comparison, courtesy of a tweet by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/davidmdavis\" target=\"_blank\">David Davis<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb16.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"304\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/image_thumb17.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"504\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:475c6400-dee2-406e-8775-eb3e2a446fe3\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding: 0px;\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2012\">Windows Server 2012<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V+Server\">Hyper-V Server<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\">Virtualisation<\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: Microsoft announced the new licensing for Windows Server 2012 since this post. \u00a0Check out the licensing scenarios here. \u00a0And note that Hyper-V is free anyway if you are legally licensing your Windows Server VMs. \u00a0Hyper-V Server has a place, but usually not when running Windows Server VMs. I was downloading some stuff from TechNet &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12769\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Ssssh!
