{"id":12679,"date":"2012-06-04T07:42:51","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T06:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12679"},"modified":"2012-06-04T07:42:51","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T06:42:51","slug":"windows-server-2012-hyper-v-does-not-require-slat-eptnpt-capable-processors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12679","title":{"rendered":"Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V DOES NOT Require SLAT (EPT\/NPT) Capable Processors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While searching for good links for my <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11979\" target=\"_blank\">WS2012 Hyper-V feature list<\/a>, I came across a very misleading <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.microsoft.co.il\/blogs\/talsa\/archive\/2012\/03\/15\/windows-8-server-hyper-v-will-require-slat-second-level-address-translation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> by a Microsoft blogger from one of their regional offices.\u00a0 The tile of the post claims that you require SLAT for Windows Server 8.<\/p>\n<p>SLAT, or Second Level Address Translation, is where memory management is offloaded to Intel EPT or AMD NPT\/RVI in the processor.\u00a0 It greatly speeds up memory performance (great for memory trashing RDS\/Terminal Services and SQL Server) and is a requirement for RemoteFX.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve seen many a confused blog post and tweet on this subject.\u00a0 The author appears to have been confused by a quote that relates to the client operating system, Windows 8, and not the server hypervisor.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s a risk when you\u2019re dealing with pre-release product codenames, and (as in this case) you\u2019re reading articles that are not in your native language.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, let\u2019s clear up the confusion.\u00a0 The server operating system continues with the traditional requirements.\u00a0 These are also requirements for the client:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>x64 CPU<\/li>\n<li>No Execute Bit turned on in the BIOS (DEP \u2013 Data Execution Prevention)<\/li>\n<li>Virtualisation turned on in the CPU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My old Dell Latitude with a Duo Core CPU can run Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 (the server OS).<\/p>\n<p>Windows 8 (the client OS) Pro and Enterprise include Hyper-V. The hypervisor on the client OS requires the above AND a SLAT capable processor, e.g. an i3, i5, or i7.
