{"id":12348,"date":"2012-04-17T01:33:47","date_gmt":"2012-04-17T00:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12348"},"modified":"2012-04-17T01:33:47","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T00:33:47","slug":"top-10-production-experiences-with-service-manager-and-orchestrator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12348","title":{"rendered":"Top 10 Production Experiences With Service Manager and Orchestrator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker: Nathan Lasnoski, MVP<\/p>\n<p>Focus is on Service Manager and Orchestrator.<\/p>\n<p>Yu can transform a business in a way that other technology projects cannot.&#160; These two products are transformative technologies.&#160; Leads to process definition, cut through sacred cows, improve efficiency, and enable users to do what they are really interested in.<\/p>\n<p>Results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Processes are more clear<\/li>\n<li>Common tasks are automated<\/li>\n<li>People do tasks that use their skills<\/li>\n<li>Time and resource spend is transparent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>1) How to get started<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Include the right people.&#160; This is not just an IT project.&#160; Examples of people to include: service desk manager, system center tech lead, IT leadership \u2026. need a champion in the business with some influence.&#160; Including the right people = success.&#160; Not just a tech project and not just an ITIL project.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>2) Choose processes strategically<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look for the processes that have the biggest payoff.&#160; They are the quick and influential wins.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Incident management<\/li>\n<li>Service request management<\/li>\n<li>Change management<\/li>\n<li>Risk and compliance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>3) Plan to transform process<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A great tool doesn\u2019t make a bad process better.&#160; This is an opportunity to improve processes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>4) Plan requests first<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plan first, build later.<\/p>\n<p>what are the questions you need to ask in the forms?&#160; What data do you need to automate a process?&#160; Organize the components and responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>5) Create a service catalogue<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everything IT does should end up in the service catalogue.&#160; Use it to service both IT and end user requests.&#160; Use service manager roles to constrain access.<\/p>\n<p>SharePoint choices:&#160; Enterprise edition gives PerformancePoint, but Foundation doesn\u2019t.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>6) Don\u2019t forget abut BI and reports<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This might be the only view that the decision maker has of the system.&#160; Ask the business decision maker (BDM) what it is they want to know.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>7) Size your environment correctly<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This requires big iron.&#160; Minimum deployment is 4 servers.&#160; Service Manager management server, datwarehouse + SQL, web server, and Orchestrator.&#160; Can have additional management servers and web portals.&#160; Could cluster datawarehouse.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>8) Have a development environment<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Build and test in here.&#160; Check performance!&#160; Version control your management packs.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>9) Don\u2019t Forget Training<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get buy-in by including people early in the planning.&#160; Show ROI and why this system is good for them.&#160; Train on what is relevant to them in the system.&#160; ITIL\/MOF important for implementers.&#160; <\/p>\n<p><strong><u>10) Use a phased approach<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t try to do the whole thing at once.&#160; Succeed end-to-end on each process.&#160; Something always comes up; plan for that.&#160; Check your can-do attitude \u2013 new requests can be done later.&#160; Watch out for \u201ctangents\u201d.&#160; Small chunks of measured and planned work are the key to success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker: Nathan Lasnoski, MVP Focus is on Service Manager and Orchestrator.
