{"id":12282,"date":"2012-03-26T09:31:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-26T08:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12282"},"modified":"2012-03-26T09:31:00","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T08:31:00","slug":"hyper-v-replica-test-failover-is-live-jean-claude-van-damme-in-time-cop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12282","title":{"rendered":"Hyper-V Replica Test Failover Is Like Jean-Claude Van Damme in Time Cop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That got your attention <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" style=\"border-style: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/wlEmoticon-smile9.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/> In the movie Time Cop, the catch with time travel was that a person who went back in time could not be in the same place as their past self or the universe would implode or something.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Movie nerds and Dr. Sheldon Cooper wannabes can save their efforts and keep the correction comments to themselves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The same is true with a server or application.\u00a0 It really can\u2019t exist twice in the same network or your career might implode or something.\u00a0 Think about it, you enable DR replication of virtual machines from one place to another.\u00a0 You want to test your DR, so you bring the replica VMs online \u2026 on the same network.\u00a0 Good things will happen, right, won\u2019t they?!?!?!\u00a0 Two machines with identical names, identical application interactions on the network, identical IP addresses, both active on the same network at the same time during the work day \u2026 nope; nothing good can come of that.<\/p>\n<p>Hyper-V Replica has you covered.\u00a0 You just need to remember to configure it after you enable VM replication and if testing failover is even a slight possibility (I\u201dm sure you could automate this with POSH but I\u2019m too lazy to look \u2013 it is after 9pm no a Sunday night when I\u2019m right this post).<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be auto asked after you enable Replica if you want to configure network settings.\u00a0 If you do (you can revisit later by editing the settings of the VM and expanding Network Adapter) then you\u2019ll see this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image_thumb10.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"604\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Network Adapter \u2013 Test Failover you\u2019ll have the option to set a Virtual Switch.\u00a0 See how it is not configured to connect to a network by default?\u00a0 Phew!\u00a0 When you do a test failover of a Replica VM, then the VM will power up on this virtual switch.\u00a0 Obviously this should be an isolated virtual switch (e.g. Internal or Private), and it should exist on all possible replica hosts (if the DR site is clustered), to avoid the Time Cop rule.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:0a04a46c-8a72-49cf-b22e-7ca961bb80ef\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"margin: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding: 0px;\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+8\">Windows Server 8<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\">Virtualisation<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/DR\">DR<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That got your attention In the movie Time Cop, the catch with time travel was that a person who went back in time could not be in the same place as their past self or the universe would implode or something.
