Yes, VMware Release Fixes Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve just read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/consumerization\/dear-hyper-v-fans-ill-take-that-apology-now\/285\" target=\"_blank\">Dear Hyper-V fans, I\u2019ll take that apology now<\/a> by apparent VMware apologist Ken Hess on ZDNet.&#160; I guess this fanboy who poses as a journalist is upset over the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/debate\/hyper-v-or-vmware\/6348000\" target=\"_blank\">hypervisor vote on ZDNet where Hyper-V beat vSphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his article, Hess says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you used VMware, you wouldn\u2019t have to reboot your vulnerable systems after patching for the RDP Worm today. Sure, you\u2019ll still have to patch all of your Windows VMs that ride on top of your VMware hosts but at least you don\u2019t have to patch and reboot the VMware host system.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Huh!&#160; Strange that.&#160; Is Hess saying that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/patchmgr\/findPatch.portal\" target=\"_blank\">VMware never releases patches for vSphere<\/a>?&#160; I think if you follow that link then you might find a different answer to that.&#160; Or maybe the almighty VMware <a href=\"http:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/selfservice\/microsites\/search.do?language=en_US&amp;cmd=displayKC&amp;externalId=2007673\" target=\"_blank\">never have to release a security fix for vSphere?<\/a>&#160; Woops, wrong again Kenny-boy.&#160; Maybe vSphere security fixes don\u2019t require a host reboot? <\/p>\n<table border=\"2\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" width=\"400\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"200\">\n<p><strong>Host Reboot Required<\/strong>            <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"200\">Yes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Oh it appears they do.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>OK, we don\u2019t have downtime for VMs then?<\/p>\n<table border=\"2\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" width=\"400\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"200\"><strong>Virtual Machine Migration or Shutdown Required<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"200\">Yes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Damn.&#160; Ken must have seen something.&#160; I know; patching vSphere must be easy just like it is for Hyper-V (where Automatic Updates, WSUS, System Center Configuration Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012, or Windows 8 Cluster Aware Update are all options):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>ESXi hosts can be updated by manually downloading the patch ZIP file from the VMware download page and installing the VIB by using the <tt>esxcli software vib<\/tt> command.
